Hey People,
From the post titles, it sees like this isn't so much a newbies section,.... but here we are. Just posted looking for help on planning our first N.American adventure. We are a Welsh+Aussie couple, living in Hong Kong and trekking so far in UK, Spain, France, Switzerland, Italy, Nepal, India, New Zealand, Australia, Turkey, Kenya, Egypt and bits of Asia, plus driving around Africa quite a bit. We are now exploring ideas of N. American holidays, especially walking. Hoping for positive responses.

Welcome. This is the right place for newbies to introduce themselves. You did a fine job. We do have a few normal questions, so bear with us a bit. BTW, this is a backpacking site, American style. Not hostel to hostel, but wilderness trekking with everything you might need for 3-10 days at a time. We do get some visitors who do the hostel thing from town to town. This is not the kind of place to seek out that kind of info. If you want info on visiting wilderness, maybe a few of the more widely known national parks, or some of the relatively obscure other wild places, This is it.
Now, so we know how to treat you, what is your opinion on: bacon ?(not that Canadian stuff) kilts? beets? brussel sprouts? single malt liquor?
I may have forgotten some, but others will chime in.

Howdy! When are you planning on visiting the US, and do you have a rough idea on what you want to see or visit? Also, are you bringing backpacking (camping) gear or are you primarily interested in sightseeing and day trips.
Backpacking has a different connotation in Europe and other parts of the world than it does in the US.

Hi James. Welcome to the forums. As Zeke explained above, backpacking in America is wilderness/nature hiking and camping with everything you need in a backpack. No hostels, no trains, no highways, no motor vehicles. Hiking and camping on the ground (or in a hammock between trees) is what we do.

Portland, Oregon has miles and miles and miles of day hiking trails obtainable with the mass transit system. It will also get you to some overnight backpacking trails in the Columbia Gorge. They are not wilderness trails, but there is stunning beauty. No doubt there are other similar cities and you can probably catch a ride to popular areas such as Mt. St. Helens out of Portland or Seattle, or from Seattle to Mt. Rainier. Here are a couple of sites with regional interest on our west coast. www.highsierratopix.com/community/index.php www.oregonhikers.org/ www.nwhikers.net/Enjoy

Welcome. Give us some details on your itinerary and we'll likely be willing and able to help and make suggestions. Plenty of fine walking here in North America.
