Hi,
I am looking for recommendation for a medium cost-range tent light. Any suggestions or preferences?

I'm confused. I guess I don't know what a tent light is. I just use my headlamp for my lighting needs in the evening.

On trips where I can spare the extra space and weight (both minimal), I have been known to carry a Luci Lantern. Unnecessary (like Coolkat I normally just use my headlamp), but a pretty cool piece of gear. |

In the interest of always having a backup, I carry two lights: a headlamp and a small (single-AAA size) penlight. The latter has a little loop of string on it that I clip into a mitten hook at the top of my tent in case I want an overhead light. But mostly I just wear the headlamp (for [un]dressing, reading, etc.) until I'm ready to go to sleep.

I use a Black Diamond Orbit Lantern for my spare light and tent light. With batteries, the Black Diamond Orbit Lantern weighs 4.5 ounces; a bit on the heavy side. I bought the Black Diamond Orbit Lantern as a spare battery holder for my headlamp and as an emergency light source. I have since found it useful as a tent light and camp light. |

When in a crowded group camp, (or anytime in camp not solo), why do you need an uber-bright headlamp on your head? Just 'cause it says headlamp does not mean you have to always wear it there. Suggest wearing your headlamp around your neck once evening time beckons - (just leave it there all night long too.) Best part is that: 1) you will always know immediately where it is at 2:00 AM...no searching, 2) - won't blind others when you look up and around, and 3) you can still easily see things right in front of you. just my 2¢ |

Once hiker midnight hits, I set my headlmp, in camp, to use the red LED and I use the low lumins setting.
I like having the ability to have a bright white light for as needed. Like when my wife and I rounded Cape Johnson in the dark; that was awesome.

I use my spare headlamp in the loft of the tent diffused with a small square of white silnylon. It creates a really nice light inside the shelter while not blinding anyone and enough for reading.

Second, it's rarely on my body at all when I'm outside the tent; only on the most moonless of nights will I use a light at all. Third, I can't imagine trying to read with a light around my neck. Finally, I always know exactly where the overhead light is and don't have to sleep with a garrote around my neck.  |

Well I was confused. Now I'm not. The last time I've ever used anything like a "tent light" was back in my childhood and my grandfather would light up the white gas lantern that sounded like a jet. Now I've been educated. However, still doesn't change my ways. I'll keep to my headlamp. I have hung it from the mesh in my tent to create a "lamp" like experience. I too rarely keep it hung around my neck. I have fairly good night vision and I make sure I know where everything is before dusk hits.

I like the Luci too.
A friend has one, works well. Cheap, even lighting and solar powered..
A question came to mind :
if you have a tent light in a light tent, is the tent still a light tent or a tent with light ?
