I agree on the industry pros chiming in. Would also like to see the cottage industry chime in as well. Definitely could be mutually beneficial.

the cottage industry chime in... t If anyone sees a Gear Q&A develop that they see as a place for an outside voice (MSR or cottage industry) shoot a letter to the Support at that company and invite them to come participate. They would have to be told about the rules of engagement, but tha is covered in the No Advertising post in How To. As you can see, I have some serious changes I want to push for, looking to add more benefit to the forum. I have the power for the moment, I want to use it...with forum members' approval.

How about having the regional editors step in now and then to ask for people's opinions on what trails to feature.

So what if an editor or two were available to jump in and answer Gear questions? They just gave an Editor's Choice Award to a set of stainless steel shot glasses. This is what they consider some of the best backpacking gear available for 2016. No, I don't take their opinions very seriously any longer. I consider folks here to be a lot more reliable and knowledgeable. That reminds me of some of the silly things I bought when I first started backpacking!

I have my opinion on the magazine...but I'll save that for a fire ring some night ;-) I've thought the same thing from time to time. I think it's difficult to prepare a magazine that's relevant for backpackers who may live most anywhere in north america. I'm glad they feature articles both on multi-night backpack trips as well as a few day hikes+car camping. I do wish they'd concentrate more on North America rather than having as many articles on overseas destinations that are out of the picture for most of us. A dream trip for me is generally just to a neighboring state.

UPDATES: Promoting the ForumI re-wrote the meta tag, so now a search for "hiking forum" or Backpacking forum" results in listing this forum in the top ten hits (not bad!) and the description says : "Backpacker Magazine's forum. Discuss Gear, Food, Regional Tips and enjoy Fun conversations." I sort of don't want to rely too much on connecting to BP.com because I'm just not sure how the future will go. I may keep the forum. Wouldn't that be funny! BTW, the suggested other ways to promote were keyword ideas, not meta tag descriptions. But thanks, guys. Advertising?I have seen the reactions (few as they were) to the use of ad links, and now we will be more willing to allow those links in signatures. New members with breathless announcements are asked to at least wait for their first mention of a product, and then explain it, not just link it. We will see how this goes, but it may turn out well. I hope. The revised policy is is available. And a potential tent advertiser says they will be calling me. A Radical IdeaI have sent an invitation to MSR asking them to consider helping in the Gear Closet.
