Peter Sinclair (Greenman3610 on YouTube) is doing one of the best jobs in the whole world media of reporting on climate change.
I live just south of the southernmost extent of the Wisconsin Ice Sheet. The topography, geology, and rich soils are an obvious result of past climates. Saying that climate has always changed is a non-sequitur, it does nothing to refute arguments for WHY it is changing now. This may be as pivotal a moment of time as the Renaissance. It is time for the society at large to decide whether to accept mythology or scientific evidence.

Hey, I know those guys. Alun Hubbard (the British dude with the hat) I went to the field with in 2012. Jason Box I'm collaborating with now on our respective projects, his PhD student Baptiste is bringing the drills along on our campaign to Greenland this Spring. We leave in just over a week (ack!). |

My house is safe from the rise in sea level. Unfortunately we are not far from the cascadia subduction fault. Things could get very strange fast if that thing rips off a big one.

Great video, Rumi! That's some beautiful footage, I hadn't seen that one before. And they obviously did their research, I couldn't see anything that was blatantly inaccurate, which is actually kinda rare for a "news outlet" video like that. Don't look yet, but right now the dice are stacked for another big melt year in Greenland. Arctic sea ice levels have been very low this winter ( NSIDC), temps have been absurdly high ( Slate) and we've had low winter snow accumulation compared to normal across much of Greenland ( GreenlandSMB), all of which sets the stage. It got above freezing today at two of our stations, far earlier in the season than normal. We actually plan Springtime trips specifically to avoid the melt for our work. Weather is a fickle thing of course, but if the Spring and Summer continue like they have been, watch out. We're potentially in for another big one. We shall see. - Mike |

Can this weather impede, or even postpone or cancel your research trip? Our flights are set in stone quite a few months in advance. Each event ends up costing an incredible amount of money so cancelling isn't in the cards. Last year, we had weather issues and we got bumped as the Summit team ended up getting priority. We still went, just a few days later than expected which was frustrating but as Mike has taught me, it's a hurry up and wait routine in Polar Research. Impede, it may do in regard to Ice core drilling. Also, We may be forced to wear flip flops and a tacky Hawaiian shirt instead of our -100 boots and several layers of coats. |
