Hello!
I am looking for a 2p-3p tent, for camping use and for a starter backpacking tent. I am leaning towards the 3p for the extra space.
After looking at a ton of options in my price range, I am finally down to 2 tents that seem to be really solid and have a lot of great reviews. However, I can't seem to decide between the two! Unfortunately, going to look at either tent is quite a drive. So when it comes down to not only weather-ability and longevity, but also convenience and comfort (gear pockets, head room, good vestibules)... what are your pros and cons on these tents?

Both tents are an ounce short of 6 pounds. Are you sure you want to carry that much?

Yes. 1. I can't afford anything more expensive that would be lighter for a 3p. 2. it would be two people sharing the weight under almost all circumstances, so I'm fine with 6 lbs. This will be our first back packing tent, so we we're not looking at hiking anything too extreme!

For a reality check on space needs look at the dimensions of the tents and lay out the outline in tape on the floor and put the stuff you want to take in with you "inside". That doesn't account for the slope of the walls which on some designs can be significant, but it's a start.
Marmot and Northface both make decent products. Another brand to look at would be REI itself, then Big Agnes who has gotten very aggressive on some of it's pricing (and at REI there's a 20% sale up until the end of today).....

I'm going to give the nod to the Marmot as it looks better ventilated, less prone to catching gusts (sleeker) and Marmot has pretty stellar customer service. I'm not a big fan of TNF.

If you decide on the Marmot, Outside Outfitters has it cheapest right now. They appear to have rep for slow shipping, so order a week or more before you want it.

They make marmots out of tungsten now? Won't rumi and marmotstew be surprised. I wonder if the tungsten is just replacement parts (hips, knees, etc.), or a complete marmot robot...

I like the entrance and ventilation of the Marmot better than the TNF. They both look fine for dealing with winds in general but since they both are basically two pole shelters, I would strongly recommend using all the guy outs possible.

REI has plus sizes of the HalfDome and QuarterDome that give some wiggle room without too much extra weight. I have the QD2+ and it's a palace for me and my wife... long enough to keep our packs inside (I'm six foot) and wide enough to give some space in between.

I use an REI Half Dome 2+ ($219) for my kayaking tent, and it has a pocket in each corner, as well as 2 overhead pockets. It has 8 inches more length than the Marmot Tungsten 3, but less width by nearly a foot. It is nearly a pound lighter.

I would sooner get a ten dollar blue tarp at the hardware store than carry a six pound tent. But then, my parents taught us early that the bugs really don't bother you like you think they will, at a very early age, and that anything nylon has the same amount of security from the Big Bad Wolf (none, really). We were out in July in the Emigrant Wilderness under one of those blue tarps enjoying the rain.
There's a four person Mountainsmith on Amazon for less money and the same weight. It's very likely of equal quality.

my parents taught us early that the bugs really don't bother you like you think they will, My phobia of waking up with a snake in my sleeping bag keeps me zipped up! I do like my Copper Spur with that option. |

Snakes never bothered anyone, either....
Why would they?
Just don't put the bedroll next to rotten logs. Ants, scorpions and all kinds of things live in them. If you're truly paranoid a sleeping bag cover in breathable material does the trick.
