I'd say a tarp like Mountain Laurel's Monk tarp in sil ($110). Think Zpacks has something similar to the AGG/DLG shelter in their 1 door Hexamid Twin; it won't be cheap though as it is Dyneema .. formerly Cuben.. material)

It's amazing how fast you can set up a tent from a dead sleep. Roll up in your ground cloth. About 2 seconds. Come on now. You don't think the old cowboys (or even the "new" ones) rousted up to pitch a tent, not that they had one, when the weather turned crappy? Thanks for the boost Blue Bear but someone who thinks "tent" for shelter really doesn't know what they're missing. Hah. One mid fall night in Mineral King a blowy snowstorm rolled in and I was happy to notice that as my ground tarp hadn't been pinned down, when the wind blew from my left that side of the tarp covered my bag and when the gusts switched direction the other side blew over my sleeping bag and all told I stayed nice and toasty. Granted I was WAY over bagged since I liked to sleep out even then. Wasn't more than a few inches so it was pretty rather than inconvenient in the morning and I wasn't that far in anyway.

Ah yes, the Eureka Solitaire. I once had a backpacking cronie who carried one of those. Wooed by the weight and the price. But like you he discovered, it was just OK. A moderate shelter at best for wilderness campaigns. It had a tendency to sag in the middle under mild snow loads, or topple over if not guyed out in the proper way. Vigorously guyed is right. I like that phraseology. Well done!
Still, and even so, when the barometer drops and conditions conspire upon you, one is grateful for what ever shelter he can get his hands on. I would sleep inside a hollowed-out horse, ala the reverent, if I had to. Wait... No, yeah, I would do that I think.

Have slept in? Eureka Amari Pass Solo. $120 CAD. Still use it.
Would sleep in? Anything, really. Even nothing.
Would carry into the back country? Well, woah now...
