Then this weekend I rode 34 miles, including one of the biggest hills around. MapMyRide calls it two "Category 3" climbs, with a 1/2 mile of slight downhill inbetween... total of 1,300' up. That was soon followed by a very steep descent. I'm a good descender, but this one was terrifying... 46 mph using brakes... with a couple of turns for added fun. Lost 2 pounds. Due to terror-induced defecation? I've been working on getting back to biking and swimming after our hiking frenzy. I strained my shoulder scrambling, so am working up very slowly with the swimming. I got carried away in the weight room this week and gave myself a setback. I am such an idiot.

Another descent week. More cycling and some splitting/stacking wood, including an ascent of one of the big hills around here (an 8-mile grinder). I'd start running again but I left my shoes at my friend's house in Lake Placid. Thankfully the weather has been for cycling. Week culminated in a 32-mile hilly ride on Sunday.

Upped my slow run to 55 min non-stop as its still too warm to mtb IHMO and running is more similar to hiking. Probably save the mtb (mountain-biking) for Oct

After a 4 day on weight training schedule I took last Saturday and Sunday off and then walked 3-5 miles Monday.Since then I have weight trained 4 of the last 6 days including the last two going through a full body cycle over that time period. Also,I walked 10 miles on Friday. But,my biggest change was nutrition related as I cut out red bull and other sugary energy drinks and otherwise cleaned up my diet. That only works if I am doing long workouts then setting out on all day bike rides and since I have been pretty much off the bike in August the result was way too many calories of the worst kind(sugar). So, I switched to yerba mate a caffeinated tea popular in South America (laced with tonghat Ali extract)to fuel my workouts.I used coffee and oatmeal(with plenty of milk)for years and this worked well until like carrying pita bread and peanut butter in my backpack I just got tired of those foods in those situations.

Monday, stack wood. Tuesday, 23-mile hilly bike ride. Friday, ran 2 miles while my son rode his bike. Saturday, a 50-mile bike ride. I thought it was going to be flat, but there was a series of short but steep drumlins on the way that caught me off-guard. Down another couple of pounds... 7 total since starting this thread.

Diet was OK. I had to attend two parties that only served hamburgers and the like, but I limited the amount eaten. Didn't get out for much formal exercise. Gained 3 lbs.

I've done five workouts in the last eight days while increasing my walking and decreasing my carbs.

I was out backpacking for over 40 miles on vacation on the Olympic coast, a few weeks ago. After the trip, returning home, I took a week off to recover and catch up on household things. This week (16-22nd of Aug) I went back to the gym. I got in 2 hours on the Versa CLimber, 2 hours doing weights, and ran a few miles on the indoor track. Also, this week, my wife and I went with meatless meals and snacks. We will remain meatless for another week, then we will go back to fish and chicken.

Good Work! I had been pushing my weight training too heavy with too few days off the last few weeks and my elbows and knees started mildly letting me know so over the last 6 days I have only done 3 workouts backing off the amount of weight as well.Did back, legs and shoulder focused workouts but threw in some arm and chest work each workout so covered the whole body. Also, backed off the walking as well compared to last week, continued to be off the bike, and continued to limit carbs.

I spent a week driving to Colorado and back, which didn't do wonders for my workouts. I tried to job at most rest stops/driver changes, but that was only to the tune of about 20 minutes a day (I couldn't do more than a few minutes at a time, as temps were mostly around 90). I did a short (30 min) bike ride in CO Springs, bringing Eldest Son's bike from Woodsie's house where we left it in June to the campus. Once I got home, I started trying to fix this. Wed: got home about 1 p.m. Biked 8.8 miles to the gym and lifted. Thurs: rode 1 1/2 hours Fri: biked to the gym and swam 3/4 mile. Sat: biked 40 miles. That was about 10 more than I really felt ready for, but the alternative was to still be sitting on the side of the road 10 miles from my car Today I've already ridden 1.6 miles RT to the grocery store, and plan to ride to the gym and lift again this afternoon. My weight is very stable. Sadly, it's very stable about 6-8 lbs over my ideal. I'd give up sodas, but I don't drink them. Trying to watch and curb snacking. Thinking about moving my writing time to the library or similar so I can't eat.

Working 12-hour days, then went for a 4-day vacation in Lake Placid. Hiked up the upper portion of Whiteface with the family on Sunday (after taking the gondola to Little Whiteface), then ran down while the family took the gondola back. My quads aren't happy with me right now. Diet was horrible. I don't even want to step on the scale.

I've gone through another weight training cycle with a 4 on schedule.Back,legs,chest/shoulders/arms,and then this afternoon since I had covered the full body with the last three I did supersets of shrugs and laying leg curls on a decline bench areas I wanted to give extra focus to.I continued to stay off the bike a did a few 3-5 mile walks while limiting sugars and starches.

After 3 weeks on the trail, my regular workouts this week were hard. Carrying a backpack over mountain passes every day didn't make my legs sore, but running 5 flat miles did. Weightlifting seemed pointless and painful. And what was I thinking getting up at 4:30 and doing a bunch of push-ups & crunches before I'm fully awake?

The week of 23 Aug was a light workout week. My wife has been ill and I've been tending to her. I did manage to get in 1 hour of running on the indoor track, 1 hour on the Versa Climber, and 1 hour doing weights on the Landmine and Cable Cross. On Friday, I finished with my 2 week venture of going meatless. I celebrated with a Double Cheese burger; super good. We decided to stick with doing meatless lunches. I did find that I felt more hungry then normal and I also felt a bit more tired the day after work outs. Now that a large range land fire has been knocked down, I hope to do more outdoor jogging. And I really hope those who practice medicine will figure out what is wrong with my wife.
