No reason to apologize. If you do, indeed, attempt this hike, I wish you every success, and hope you report back. I admire you for setting yourself such a worthy goal.

The PCT is not something to take lightly. The PCT gear, however, is something to be carried lightly.

I apologize for offending you all.... Nobody was offended! You have to start somewhere, and people want to help you. Start reading the many posts here; there are lots of Q&A about the very gear you seek. Ironically, there's a fresh new list of info about how to select the main gear items posted. Meanwhiles, the PCT is a big bite. Where are you located? There must be a nearby area where you can go two or three days with whatever gear you now have, maybe getting one good new piece to start building a better gear collection. If Boy Scouts hike with basic quality gear, you can get started too. Then add as you can, swapping out "starter" stuff as you can. All the high-end stuff costs high-end money! Break it into chunks and get outdoors using what you have. Stick around. Read the info and follow the links others have offered. Be inspired. Build the dream. Learn from others and maybe avoid some mistakes we all have made. You want to hike, you want to get new gear. Nobody is offended by your getting started.

I think you should do what you so obviously want to do, but start small.
Read the FAQ just posted. I know it's not all that, but it's what I try to give people in my backpacking class.
You can take backpacking classes. I think you should. It will only excite you more.

Hello everyone! After reading all of your comments here, I abject and apologize for offending you all for posting the "WTB". I have come to a conclusion to withdraw my request. I humbly ask that my request for WTB these items listed in my first post to be completely disregard. The posts I put up here will be completely removed. I want to thank you all for taking the moments to express what you felt and thoughts. Best regards, Steven If you'd like some suggestions on some really nice sections of the PCT to experience for a week or two or three just ask. I expect people have their favorites but there's likely to be a selection that would give great experiences and memories without the thoroughgoing commitment of a six month trail hike. Depending on what you've done in the out doors before there's always some group things to get you started: The Yosemite Conservancy offers backpacks where the experience is the same but there are other people accompanying you to share their thoughts on gear and such. IIRC REI stores often have similar programs and I shook out a LOT of my equipment issues on nothing more than long weekends.

Hello everyone,
My heartfelt thanks for the last few comments. Thank you!
In the past, I have made a numerous hiking trips in East, Midwest, and West, Europe and western part of Canada. Thought I'd post "WTB" the items needed to replace the old camping equipments. That's all there is to it.
Best,
Steven

I also forgot to mentioned that I grew up on Navajo Reservation hence hiking, camping and hunting is in my blood. Hope that clears up the air between all of us here.

Had you explained your experience, we could have told you that gear has changed so much over the years, that packs are like clothes now -- they have different sizes, different frames, different ways of fitting, than old school gear. Everything has changed. There are so many options now that had I sent you a full setup of mine, you would have been unhappy with it because none of it would fit you. My sleeping pads are not likely to be right for you, nor is my tent.
It's a common thing for newbies here to not know how to ask questions, and a common thing for old school backpackers to find the new backpackers confusing. I suggest hanging out and reading more of the threads to start figuring out how it's all changed.

Yes.
Sometimes I do not understand bilagaana people's way of thinking. There's an old saying goes: "If we don’t like the answers life keeps giving us, then perhaps we should change our questions." :-)

Thank you Paula. There are several hiking trails which are my favorites. One that is in and around Navajo Reservation.
Fishing is a taboo to Navajo people. Sorry to disappoint you.
May I ask the same question to you?

There's an old saying goes: "If we don’t like the answers life keeps giving us, then perhaps we should change our questions." :-) SRT That saying goes well for internet forums. It's so much easier to have a conversation in person, to have all the information you need to understand each other. I frequently get experienced backpackers in the class I teach, because there are so many rules and choices to make now that it's hard to sort through it all. Sometimes they just need to figure out what questions they want to ask. I was stupid at the start -- I just had my own answers, bought a bunch of stuff, figured out I needed to ask questions, asked the wrong ones, bought more stuff, and it's been a while, but I think I'm finally figuring out how to ask questions.

I like to hike in the Sierra, especially Yosemite. I like to fish, but lately I find it difficult to justify the non-resident cost of a fishing license in California. I live in Nevada.
