This is from North Chickamauga Canyon, just north of Chattanooga, TN:

I saw this little guy a few weeks ago on Big Snowbird Creek, Nantahala National Forest, NC:

I am glad you did. We don't have those out here in the west. BTW, here is an interesting fact that few know: There are 150 species of salamanders in North America (above Mexico). That is more species of salamanders than anywhere else in the entire world for the same area. We have over 50 species of salamanders in the Southern Appalachians; 30 recorded in the Smokies alone (about 800sq miles). The red efts are the easiest to spot because they're always walking around like they own the place.

It certainly looks to me like a Texas Spiny Lizard, but don't you live in the Houston area? I'm in Eureka, Tx which is about 60 miles south of Dallas. I'm pretty sure it's a spiny lizard judging by my keen since of googling. I burned a small brush pile last winter and one of them came out of the pile. It was too cold for it to really run so I took it in to warm up before relocating it to another pile I didn't plan to burn. I didn't realize how fast it could get after warming up. It got loose, my girlfriend freaked and it lived with us for a week until I saw the curtain move one day and was able to track it down and catch it again. It might be the same one but I've seen others before.

I'm in Eureka, Tx which is about 60 miles south of Dallas. Okay, that makes better sense. That is well within the range of the Texas Spiny Lizard. Thanks for the clarification.

Figured out that it's an Eastern Fence Lizard. I gotta wonder where they come up with these names.

Yep. The first time I saw one and ID'd it, I had to laugh. Yes, I was on the Eastern side of the country, and yep, the lizard was on a fence ...

The feet & claws look like a snapper but not the kind I'm use to seeing around here.

Rescued this guy/girl (didn't take the time to look that closely) from the pool this morning. Kids wanted to keep it, and once upon a time I would have let them, but I believe wild animals should stay wild.

A sighting of the rare Northeastern Snow Snake. Don't let anyone tell you it was a common garter snake that got stuck in a snow-covered drainage ditch.
