I want to do a trip in the Eagle Cap Wilderness this summer. Best timing? Would love to see wildflowers, but not a big fan of mosquitoes. In the Sierra beginning of August was the best time to see the former when the latter were starting to fade - is it similar for the mountains up here? Best trails/campsites? I'm fond of trips where you can base camp in a lake basin for a couple of days while exploring side trails. Lastly, anyone want to come with? Hey tarol - did this trip ever happen? Looks like I'll be in the area right about Labor Day next year - I'd be interested in spending a few nights here. I'm a big fan of basecamp trips, too

I was going to go to the blues fest there in August and then backpacking, but did not get to go until Sept. probably better not so hot or crowded. I did the same loop, written up in Doug Lorrain's book,
"Another is the East/West Wallowa River loop--up the East Fork to Aneroid Lake, over Polaris Pass to Frazier and Glacier Lakes, over Glacier Pass to Mirror, Moccasin, etc., then out the West Fork. A bit more walking and less lakelollygagging on this one. See here."
but I did not go to Eagle Cap, I camped 2 days at Aneriod , 1 at Frazier, 1 at Horseshoe (which I liked), too tired to go to Ice Lake

Such a beautiful place, but nobody seems to hike! lol Anyway, we're moving to Northern California in January. Will come back up to Eastern Oregon for the eclipse in Aug 2017 with the WWWW gang and am planning at least one hike, in the Strawberry Mtns Wilderness, and possibly a second if I can get one or two in the group to stick around longer, in the Eagle Cap.
