Any suggestions for a way to attach a point and shoot camera to my backpack so that it can be quickly accessed to catch those "moments"? Ive tried a couple things, but the camera is either swinging around or I can't reach it fast enough. I am new to Basecamp and fairly new to backpacking. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Our backpacking camera has a strap and biner combo, the strap is sewn onto the camera. My wife, who carries the camera, normally carries the camera in either her shirt pocket or in the backpack side pocket. Either place the camera is attached to a spectra cord so it does not get away. This setup, does not allow us to catch all the shots but it is a good balance of keeping the camera secure and camera availibility.

Our technique is to place the point & shoot camera inside a camera case (soft or hard) and run the backpack sternum strap through it. Thereby carrying the camera and case chest high for easy access. We always insure that the neck strap is pulled over your head as a back-up to prevent accidental dropping. I believe this technique is demonstrated on my avatar to the left.

I have my camera strap around my neck. I made a couple velcro straps that attach to my shoulder strap. It works alright and I can adjust for different lenses. I have been hunting for a holster than can attach to my shoulder strap but haven't found the exact one I want.

I wear pants/shorts with large cargo pockets and deep regular pockets. I dedicate one of the pockets to my camera. The regular pockets are deep enough to securely hold the camera and the cargo pockets are closed with velcro and a flap. I leave the wrist strap hanging out of the pocket so it's easy to pull the camera out. Things hanging around my neck are very uncomfortable. When I carry it at all, my e-xtrex gps is the bulkiest item on my pack strap, only because it needs to see the sky. Using my pants pocket allows me to have access to my camera even when I'm not carrying a pack.

I used to keep the camera in a cargo pocket. I know within half a mile or so where one of my former cameras slipped out, when unexpectedly I had to maneuver in such a way that the pant leg tipped just the wrong way, but never found it again.
Now I dedicate one of the two hip belt pockets to the current point and shoot camera.

Isn't that the way it goes. We're always looking for improvements and adjustments.

Google "binocular strap harness" and see if that's a possible route you want to try.

I have always had two strings attached to my pack that connect to the camera with little rings or mini 'biner type snaps. I have the camera dangle about sternum high, and unclip it before taking the pack off. It swings around a bit, so I put a hand on it when it swings. Its available for a quick picture as I'm walking, without the need to take the pack off. Plus the weight is on the pack, not my neck.

Point & Shoots are easy :-) I have a little case for my P&S that I wear on my sternum strap. The zipper is oriented on the top and right sides. This makes it very easy to pull the zipper open with my left hand as I also slip my right hand through the wrist strap (which is left hanging outside the case) and grab the camera. I have my camera strap around my neck. I made a couple velcro straps that attach to my shoulder strap. It works alright and I can adjust for different lenses. I have been hunting for a holster than can attach to my shoulder strap but haven't found the exact one I want. Have you checked out any of the Peak Designs clips (Coolkat linked their website)?

I have a little case for my P&S that I wear on my sternum strap. I tried this on my last hike but on my shoulder strap not my sternum. It's a rare day when I use my sternum strap. But every 2nd or 3rd time I took off my pack the case fell off also because because the velcro got stressed when I took it on and off. The case I used needed a different attachment style.

Have you checked out any of the Peak Designs clips (Coolkat linked their website)? I hadn't but it does look better than what I'm using now. My ultimate goal is for a true holster as I am often climbing over logs, up dirt/rock walls, and such. I'm just as concerned about damage as I am quick access.
