I did some trail building on that section when it was still road-walking. Floating through the Narrows section on the Courtois is really nice. Great little creek.

Irish Wilderness, southeast Missouri. I personally love Hercules Glade, great camping sites on rock ledges by the creek and pretty little trail. Last week somebody told me that Whites Creek Trail was their favorite. I haven't been in several years since the Buffalo River is closer to home, but we never met many (if any) other people on the trail. It is a pretty laid back trail, nothing rough.
My favorite time of year to backpack in Missouri or Arkansas has to be any month NOT July, August, maybe even September. Humidity + Bugs + Poison Ivy = Living Hell.

Morty - Thanks for the heads-up on Jones Spring. It looks like it might be a great place for Little Hungry's first backpack, given the relatively small trail system. I had always thought I would take him down to the short loop in Forest Glen east of Champaign, but Jones might be a bit more "rustic".
I have only seen pics of Cove Hollow as I have spent more time on the eastern side of the Shawnee. Little Grand Canyon was really cool. Pomona Bridge was cool too.

Take the path closer to the edge, especially if less traveled

I'm in northern Illinois now. I live just west of Chicago. Have you ever been up to Porcupine Wilderness State Park in Upper Michigan? It's under 8 hours away and I've backpacked there more often than any other destination, usually the first weekend in October when the bugs are gone and fall color is peaking. Shawnee National Forest in Southern Illinois has a lot of great hiking, less than 6 hours away. If you haven't been to Red River Gorge in Kentucky, you should. I've backpacked in Missouri a couple times. Hawn State Park is nice, but the loop can be hiked in a day. The Ozark Trail offers some very good backpacking, but it's linear and car shuttles (by commercial outfitters in the area) are not cheap. I've dayhiked Taum Sauk and Bell mountains, which are connected by the O.T. A 2 or 3 day backpacking loop is possible in Hercules Glades in SW Missouri.

I know I'm late to this conversation but I would suggest Hercules Glades Wilderness Area, the Ozark National Scenic Riverways, or anywhere along the Ozark Trail. The OTA website at www.ozarktrail.com/ has a trip planner that will let you select the length of trail you'd like.
