I've used my pack as the carry-on often but invariably check another bag anyway. Avoids any issues with hiking poles, needle stakes, backpacking stoves, etc. at security. Also like to take a knife of some sort which has to be checked.
Like Rebecca, I almost always rent a car at the destination, so luggage is usually not an issue. I just like not worrying about my pack getting wrecked, or my gear getting confiscated at security. My experience is that security can be unpredictable, especially when traveling internationally.
Just having finished criss-crossing the country for music school auditions with my son, carrying on 3 instruments, I'm happy to pay checked luggage fees.

For hostel-to-hostel travel, I won't carry much more than a school bag. A few days of clothing, toiletries, a few electronics, a water bottle, travel documents, some snacks maybe.
For destination hiking, I'd pull everything tight and tie off the excess strap. Hip belt around the back as previously mentioned. Essentially, just make the bag as snag-free as possible.

Hello!
I am contemplating a through hike on PCT from the border to the other border. Preparation is a must in order to survive on the trail with appropriate equipment. I have an old backpack, BA 15 sleeping bag, 4-season Northface Tree frog tent, and such. I don't know if this would suffice for a through hike.
I'm thinking about getting a new backpack (Gregory Baltoro 75 pack; Deuter ACT Lite 65+, and or REI Traverse 70. My measurement is 44-46 chest, 32 waist, I know it would constitute a medium to large sized. Anyone who have these backpack listed above. Can you please share your experience?
Any other suggestions you feel will benefit me for my through hike, would be greatly appreciated.

for DyanTX's needs, I bet a 40 L pack would have plenty of room. Maybe even a 30L.
