So to me, it's the chargeable item that adds complexity, if I have to charge in the middle of a trip. Generally you should get better performance with rechargeable. My Black Diamond Spot takes 3AAA and is rated for 200 hrs on low (they didn't have a rechargeable version when I bought it). The rechargeable Spot is rated at 225 hrs on low. So likely a rechargeable will last you a whole trip. One tip about charging is don't leaving your power pack attached to your phone longer than you have to get to like %90. At least with my phone I think it assumes wall charger when plugged in and runs at full power. No battery savings tricks. If I leave it plugged in overnight the pack is pretty drained by morning.

rebeccadI replace the Petzl CORE every two years. Anecdotal answer at best. No scientific reason just precautionary life cycle.

For the few non-rechargeable items I still use, I power them with Panasonic Eneloops. I really don't think there's much reason for single-use batteries anymore.

I looked up the CORE and it is lithium ion. Petzl guarantees it for two years or 300 charges.
Typically a Li ion can get around 500 charges depending on how its used. High current apps may shorten that. A charge is full capacity discharge/full recharge cycle. If you discharge %50 then recharge you would have to do that twice to be considered about a full cycle.
If you are going to store a Li ion device for months it is better to store it half charged than full charged. Li ion batteries can damage themselves when left at full charge or no charge for too long.

FYI Eneloops are a Nickel-metal hydride chemistry. Not quite as energy dense as Li ion but are not known to burst into flames like Li ion batteries sometimes do. Unlike Li ion they can be made into AAA and AA form factor. Some good things about Eneloops is that can be stored for years and lose little charge and do much better in the cold than alkaline.

So to me, it's the chargeable item that adds complexity, This is where I'm at with my "older" equipment I guess. Everyone (well gear reviews on youtube anyway) seem to only want rechargeables. I personally prefer my black diamond storm that takes 3aaa. I use energizer lithiums and it seems to last me a couple years. Now keep in mind I probably only get 15 evenings or so every year.
