I feel like some combination of compacting the midsoles and wearing the soles makes them better suited for cutting grass or walking the dog rather than serious hiking. I’ve probably logged between 10 and 20,000 miles over the last 25-30 years in light boots. They don’t chew up my feet like the old all-leather boots did, so I consider them very well suited to “serious hiking,” whatever that is. Can’t put crampons on them, but I’m not going anywhere i need to. You can put microspikes on them.

didn't mean to imply you can't hike in boots/shoes with glued-on soles and cushioned midsoles, just that their lifespan for me is closer to a running shoe, when i was still running. even with custom orthotics, EVA-cushioned midsoles lose some of their shape and spring at some point, which means it's time to buy a new pair and relegate the old ones. i'm on my fourth pair of Salomon low hikers for that reason, but i have an old pair stashed in a basement closet for weekly yard work and walking the dog in crappy weather.
