I have a relatively old Android phone . A Samsung A50. Right now when I backpack I carry it in one of the hip belt pockets on my Osprey Aether 70. It just fits in. I keep nothing else in the pocket beside a quart freezer bag so that I don't lose anything else taking my phone in and out while hiking. My phone has no IP rating so it just fit in the freezer bag. I can still use it through the bag for maps but pictures are blurry. I haven't been able to do any trips longer than four days on the trail for a long time so I leave my phone on with WiFi turned off. When I get a chance to do longer trips I would likely at least start in airplane mode so all the radios were off.
I have been considering an upgrade to my phone but everything seems to be a little bigger so I don't know how I would carry it.
Where and how do you carry your phone?

I currently have an older model iPhone that is 3 x 6, so it resides in a cargo pocket unless I'm wading deep water. It is rated for IP68, but I have yet to really test that. I am watching to see what iPhone I will swap out to in the future, as I really don't want something that is too big for my cargo pocket.

I've been carrying mine in my cargo pocket, even though it's too heavy to be totally comfortable there. I use it to take pictures, so it's handy in the cargo pocket.

I use one of these for my phone: www.hyperlitemountaingear.com/products/shoulder-pocketI initially left it fully unzipped for ease of access but my phone slipped out and fell into a creek during a water stop. No damage but I now pull the zip and keep it partially closed now.

I nearly always carry it in my lid pocket. When I go without a lid pocket, it usually lives in a hipbelt pocket.

I was just thinking that I am likely one of the few without an IP rated phone. IP68 would be good for a phone you backpack with.
I also have a impact resistant case and use a glass screen saver. Does the newer Gorilla glass not need a screen protector?

I keep my iPhone 11 pro (pretty small) in either a hipbelt pocket, where it’s in the way, my cargo pocket, where it’s annoying, or the water bottle pocket on the pack, where it is both annoying to get at and at an admittedly small risk of falling out. It’s waterproof to depths beyond where i swim, and I’ve tested that (swimming with iit in my pocket so I could take photos from the other side).

Does the newer Gorilla glass not need a screen protector? Yeah, IP68 gives some peace of mind. I feel like it buys me a few minutes to get better stowed in a downpour. I have a glass screen protector, since I'm unwilling to put the Gorilla glass to the test. I learned a lesson from my last phone and bought what I hope to be lifetime supply of screen protectors. My last phone outlived the commercial availability of protectors by three years.

Upgraded to a Pixel 6 last year, mostly for low light photographs. IP68. Only camera I sometimes carry is a 6oz ultracompact Sony WX220 -for it's 10X zoom. Phone also used for Caltopo map navigation, so nice to keep handy during off trail routes. Bought the shoulder pouch from Westbound gear Didn't care for the zipper so strapped a piece of velcro on top for easier access. Didn't want to mess the magnetic closures on REI pouches since I still carry a real compass. If it fits into my new Circuit hip pockets, may store it there. Especially if I also take the WX220 and Garmin Mini 2.

Yeah, I kept my last phone for something like seven years, during which time I went through three screen savers. I discovered they discontinued when I tried to get more. The USB connector had been broken for a couple years by then, so I could only charge it wirelessly, so I upgraded not long afterward.

I’ll keep it in a shoulder pouch to theoretically have it ready to take a picture. Hasn’t really worked out though for pictures that need to be taken quickly. Many new packs out there have shoulder pouches built in, but if I go back to shorts with cargo pockets, may give those a whirl again.
Protection-wise, I tripped one evening hike and hit a rock, landing on my cargo pocket containing my phone encased in a highly regarded shell. Cracked the screen but the company said these cases can’t take a beating above a certain level. Think the shoulder pouch would be less likely to be caught between a rock and a heavy part of the body

I'm not much on putting stuff in cargo pockets. So much so the pants and shorts I wear on the trail don't have them. Don't need them if I'm not going to use them. I don't like the way the pants bounce into my leg when there is something in them. Also seems like kind of an exposed place for a phone and most cargo pockets only hold down the flap. They're not fully closed really.

They're not fully closed really. The cargo pants I use have full zippered closures. Defeats the stealth if I want to take a pic of a shy critter, but that's the only precaution I have against the phone falling out. I wear the phone in a cargo pocket in civilization, as well. I guess I have just adjusted to the slapping.

When backpacking I have an REI waterproof pouch attached to my shoulder strap. The top flap folds over and came with a magnet, but I added some strong velcro for additional security. Easy quick access with one hand, which is good for using the Gaia app on my phone.
