I'm surprised about all this boot talk since you all wear sneakers as far as I am concerned.

ErnieW, how did you get ahold of the boots Frankenstein's monster wore when he trekked across the Arctic wasteland?

ErnieW, hot did you get ahold of the boots Frankenstein's monster wore when he trekked across the Arctic wasteland? After all that happened I found them with my metal detector.

Have to enjoy this group turning spam into something palatable. I'm guilty as any about endless discussions on footwear (and gear in general). Always like hearing what works for others to get some ideas I might not otherwise have found. Specifics matter. Heaps of "best of" gear articles. Some are useful.

My take on best hiking boots: I am a model of either preparedness or uncertainty as I have four different hiking and backpacking boots in my collection. Take that back, I have four three season and two snow/ice winter hiking or trekking pair of footwear. Either favorites or I made them work through insoles or the socks they are paired with. Two full leather though one on its last season and will not be replaced because I don't do heavy load full alpine type assaults any more. One of the three season is a very vaporous trail runner that is a great stream crossing shoe that can won all day in a pinch with a moderate load and multiple crossing, but not day after day.

rangewalker, may I ask which 3 season backpacking boot is your favorite? Of course what fits you best may not work for me, but I've been exploring the more supportive options for backpacking in rugged terrain. Yesterday at my local REI I tried on the Lowa Renegade in a wide, and it still felt a tad narrow. I'm willing to go beefier with the Lowa Camino EVO (one reviewer said it's wider than the Renegade) but I'm still in the exploratory stage. I even looked online at brands favored by hunters (Crispi, Hanwag, Schnee's) but I have a $100 REI gift card so I'll probably limit myself to their offerings. I wish they had more Scarpa models, as the Kailash Trek appeals to me. I have an old pair of Garmonts that still function well, but REI doesn't carry that brand. I have two arthritic ankles, and I'm feeling the need for more support. At this stage I no longer plan big daily mileage, so light & fast footwear isn't my highest priority.

Of course what fits you best may not work for me, but I've been exploring the more supportive options for backpacking in rugged terrain My current favorite is my three year old pair of Lowa Ranger lll GTX. Leather outer, fabric inner. I have ageist pronation so I need a bit wider footbox so the last two decades, I went from Scarpa to Lowa lasts. The only con is the GoreTex liner but this model does seem to overheat like my previous experience. I also invest in premium merino wool socks and that helps abate the issue. My opinion, free of course, is the Lowa Renegade line, there are a bunch of different variants, is an interesting boot for mixed hiking. For day hiking on improved trails, I am use Altra Lone Peak Hiking Boot. They are a meh for durability but I can hike and bike in them too on mixed days.

Have you tried any boots by Zamberlan? REI has many of their models. Have you seen this model? It comes in wide and is super well-made boot. I had a pair. Very nice… www.rei.com/product/774690/zamberlan-vioz-gtx-hiking-boots-mensDunham boots are known for their wide fit. New Balance owns them. Not sure how they are in term of quality anymore. But it could be worth a look to see what they make these days. Regards, DR

downriver, yes I've examined (online) all the backpacking rated boots at REI. The Vioz is a potential candidate, depending on fit (available in wide). It's very beefy and a bit heavier than the Lowa Camino EVO, but the decision will really come down to fit. If REI doesn't meet my need, I might buy from a different retailer.
