North of I40 in NM my favorites are:
Rio Grande Gorge near Questa, NM: Spectacular, have had great weather there in early march.BLM's Wild Rivers Recreation Area. Car camping on rimm, overnighting a shelter in the canyon, it's freakin' incredible. I have facebook pics. Remember "easy Rider?"
Chaco Canyon: Incredible night sky, some serious archaeology. Worth it IMO Roads can get bad but well mantained on north side now.
South of I40:
Bosque del Apache: More facebook pics. Incredible avian awesomeness.
Truth or Consequences-Hillsboro-Gila Cliff Dwellings-San Francisco River Canyon-Whitewater Canyon: did this twice in the mid 80s for several days in March.
Gotta run. GO CELTS!

excellent time for a Southwest road trip ecocentric as much is popping right now, well done As rebecca noted, your very best online information for wildflowers will be the desertusa.com site wildflower update page. In SoCal, only Death Valley has been exceptional to this point because much of the rest of the Mojave Desert has either had below or near normal rains. www.wrcc.dri.edu/cgi-bin/anomimage.pl?cal6mPpct.gifArizona did much better in late fall. www.wrcc.dri.edu/cgi-bin/anomimage.pl?ari6mPpct.gifbut no so much during this winter that is more important. www.wrcc.dri.edu/cgi-bin/anomimage.pl?ari90dPpct.gifHowever after a very dry Fe bruary, the Pacific is set to start peeing on our areas again starting this Sunday so much could change in a few weeks and note many of our desert areas normally peak at the end of March. I was in DV from Feb 12 > 16 when the big bloom areas peaked, it was epic, and visitors were still sparse. Those areas are declining while other less impressive areas at a bit higher elevations are just coming into peak and others will follow well through the month. I'll be completing a lengthy feature for my site with over 30 images on the trip by this weekend. And will be returning again after mid month for a full 9 days. enlarged vertical slice image link

I've been without wifi and my phone is on the blink, but yesterday a hike in the Panamint Canyon turned up a colony of the highly endangered Panamint Daisy. More later.

highly endangered Panamint Daisy I am so jealous! I hope you plan to post some photos. (Hint: Spring starts on Sunday and there will be a new section for Springtime photos to replace the Winter Wonderland.)

Panamint Canyon turned up a colony of the highly endangered Panamint Daisy. More later. I will NEVER forget driving up that road with my FiL (an old botanist), his head out the window scanning for panamint daisy. He found some, and we didn't die, but...

I'll post photos when I get a chance. We are spending a day in LA hanging out with Ben2world. I thought a little time at Huntington Garden might help with my plant identification.
