I wonder how many birds created all that, or how many bird-years.

Also, I feel sorry for the woodpeckers. It's like their 401k was entirely invested in cryptocurrency that got hacked. There's no avian FDIC or FTC or SEC.

I wonder how aware the birds were of how big their stash was. How much of it did they have ready access to? When were they going to start eating it down? I didn't realize they had any kind of long-term planning.
Woodpeckers are among my favorite birds to watch in the wild. It's not just that they're so big and showy. I'm fascinated by the way they fly, usually with so little wing movement, but sometimes with great bursts of effort.

2-5 years? As in, maybe a COVID hoard? I'd heard of TP stashes, and disinfectant. Maybe a couple of other items, but not acorns.

BigLoad - I added an article from the NY Post to my original post that has more details. Apparently there were holes all over the siding, and the birds continued to drop acorns while the contractor was on-site. We get everything from little downies coming to our window feeder, to the pileateds that drill our ash trees for borer larvae. When we first moved in, we'd get a male that would rap on our (then) metal chimney flue. Sounded like an someone was shooting an AK in our living room.
