My first backpack in the Sierra might've been my last...got flown out in a helicopter. I may tell the story when the 40th anniversary comes around in August...

Back in the late 60's - a high school teacher/backpacker organized the JMT into 5, 1-week summer trips. (BTW, I had never even heard anything about backpacking/clueless but...why not?) Each week a new 10 drove up, took over Kelty packs and sleeping bags from the old 10...tube tents too...food carefully pre-packaged...3 adults...~50 miles.
I drew week 1, (Half Dome!) but at Reds, there were two no-shows (go figure!). Food already paid for..."Anybody want to go on week 2 for free?" Long story short, my first backpacking trip ended 5 weeks later at the Portal...now hooked...almost didn't go.
