I wonder if something cheap & effective could be found in an army surplus store or a second hand shop. I have a Viet Nam-era M65 jacket that I now only wear to work on the car in cold weather. I agree it would be good for bushwhacking. Oh my! I just realized that I've had this jacket for over 40 years now. That makes it the longest-standing piece of clothing I have that I bought myself. I have a couple older inherited pieces, though.
I thought of another contender: the Kuhl Burr jacket. I use one for yard work and shoulder season dayhikes.

I think it's supposed to be an outdoorsy casual jacket. The outer is tightly woven cotton and it has a very thin polyester microfleece lining. That makes it fairly warm, so it's pretty good for late fall to early spring while on the move. The openings above the cuffs are gusseted and the collar is probably meant to be worn standing up, which is how I wear it. My main application is cool-weather yard work or hilly neighborhood walks. It functions pretty well for those activities.
It's constructed with fancy piecing, which gives the arms a nice shape which is as much functional as fashionable. It appears to be pigment dyed, so it develops an individualized patina according to wear. Every single pocket is zippered, so you're not going to lose anything. Both the inner and outer chest pockets are big enough for a smart phone. The lower pockets are well-situated for walking with your hands in. All the zippers are metal YKK. They have a tarnished brass color, but I doubt if they're really brass.
I would probably wear it more if it were less casual and didn't overlap as much with my other jackets.

Thanks BigLoad for that informative review. Stylish & functional is a pretty good two-for-one.

I often find myself walking on trailless undeveloped properties for my work, often with thick brambles. Can't go wrong with Carhartt.
