I was doing a little research on GPS trackers and it seems the one I see most often used is the Garmin Inreach Explorer+. But Garmin lists this on their site as "previous models". Does anyone know if there is a newer version and/or does anyone have any recommendations on comparable models? This unit has a lot of features I would really like including 24/7 satellite texting, SOS button, trail cookies for tracking back to where you came from, and tons of GPS maps available with subscription. But I get the impression it might be outdated. Thank You

Don't forget the Mini InReach 2. For many it has the features needed in a much smaller package. I have a Mini InReach and like it a lot (not too crazy about the subscription fee but for the features I pay it). I don't want a larger, heavier map capable screen on my GPS. I use my phone for that.

Don't forget the Mini InReach 2. Also, note that this item is currently on sale at REI. Doesn't do everything you've described, but as ErnieW says, if you carry a smartphone, the Mini2 might be a good option. I'm considering picking one up during the sale to replace my 7 year old Inreach SE.

Garmin just hit the market with a messenger to head on with the Zoleo and Bivy Stick messengers. Pros, handles some more functions and battery life than the Zoleo or Bivy stick. Cons, The Zoleo and its app work much more seamlessly between cellular, satellite and even Wi-Fi with messaging. And it is easier to communicate between other messengers with email and SMS messaging. www.garmin.com/en-US/p/793265I have two winters with my Zoleo now and appreciate it. The new Garmin would have given me second thoughts if it had been in the running in 2020. For digital maps I prefer my iPhone, iPad 8, and PC with GAIA. Bike computer I use RWGPS and GAIA and love I can manage maps across all my devices.

I have an older inReach, some sort of Explorer model I think.
Note that the newer models, notably the Minis, have significantly less battery life. That may or may not be an issue for you, depending on how long you'll be out and how you intend to use it. I only turned my model on twice a day as a signal that I'm alive and moving, thus conserving the battery. If I planned to stay in one place for a while I sent out a message saying so.
I would assume that newer models have longer lasting batteries, AND which work better in cold temperatures, which depends on the type of battery.

For anything with a built in rechargeable battery I’ll back it up with a battery pack and the matching cable. I got spoiled back in the “everything runs on AAAs” days.
