I really agonized over getting an InReach Explorer, mainly because I could hardly bear the idea of being reachable in the back country. But in the end I went ahead and got one, and I'm glad I did. I had owned a SPOT for 6 years, and found it to be quite unreliable. A PLB is generally better to have in an emergency, but it doesn't provide the day to day peace of mind of the InReach. In the end, I decided I was buying peace of mind for my wife more than safety for myself, so I went with the InReach. I think this is an important distinction to make in considering this purchase.
Not sure what purchases are in the future for me right now. Possibly an underquilt for my hammock, like Ohm I am also considering a lighter pack, possibly a ZPacks Arc Blast. Truthfully, I'm in pretty good shape right now in the gear department.

This thread went into similar items, but there was a pretty good discussion of PLB/SPOT/Delorme. You might want to check it out.

We want a DeLorme InReach Explorer. Fortunately we just found out we qualify for a pro deal for one so we will be purchasing it soon! I'd also like some lighter trekking poles, but they are in the "would be nice to have" category and not a real necessity at the moment. Ha! I bought one over the holidays for full price and than just recently qualified for a deal Regardless it has been a great piece of equipment for me during my winter trips. Had a spot before but would never know if the "ok" messages went through. I have my inreach set to beep when the messages go through. Overall though, the NUMBER 1 reason why I got the InReach was for weather forecasts. VERY useful feature for long trips in the backcountry. -Kevin

Ohm, I just received my Z Packs Arc Blast 60L. I added One belt pouch and Multi Pack. Total about 1-1/2#. Now to load it up and adjust for fit. It only took a year to pull the trigger (bought a condo last year instead) lead time was about 4 weeks.

zipposdad Did you get the Cuben or Dyneema pack material? I see the Dyneema costs less then the Cuben but weighs a bit more. Do let me know how the Arc Blast works out for you. The ZPakcs products we bought have worked well for us with their light weight but we are hung up on the part of not being able to try a pack on before we buy. Perhaps the tent prices may drop a bit when ZPacks start making a Dyneema tent product.
