I'd love to experience a New England autumn, but as Rebeccad mentioned, I think the driving time West would be the deciding factor for me. So in my case, the answer would be Yellowstone, but from PA, probably New Hampshire.

I’m leaning more in that direction, plus, truth be told? I’ve been to Wyoming many more times than New Hampshire, and that fall color looks amazing. www.visitwhitemountains.com/events/fall-foliage/foliage-tracker/Had I not just driven back and forth from the Sierra maybe not, but even I can get road tripped out it seems. 😎

The autumn explosion of color in the Whites is really one of the best I’ve seen but my heart is in the West so I’m not going to vote and simply wish you a good journey.

Here are a couple of photos from today (9/15/22) from Mount Washington. They came from:

Yeah, I’ve been up there: crazy cold with the frost streamers straight out from the handrails.
SAR must be run ragged on those peaks.

I've been on top of Mt Washington in the wintertime. The very thick rime ice on all the man made stuff like railings, signs and buildings is intense. The sort of tourist-y top all iced in and desolate was pretty cool.

HSF, if you go to the Presidentials and want some suggestions, let me know.

HSF, if you go to the Presidentials and want some suggestions, let me know. Thanks. Any thoughts about around Basin Brook Reservoir? I’ve got a site at the WMNF Basin Campground. But I’m open to driving a bit for nice day hikes.

Here is a forecast map for 2022. If you look you might see what I was saying about a few miles difference. It looks like the High Peaks in NY will be peaking earlier than NH.

But I’m open to driving a bit for nice day hikes. Although I've always wanted to hike Carter/Wildcat, I'm actually not familiar with that area. I've done plenty of hikes in the Presidentials, plus some in the Bethel/Sunday River area, but none in-between. Really can't go wrong with the area. You might want to take at least one dayhike above treeline to get the full effect of the fall colors.
