The Adirondack high peaks are one of my favorite places. I haven't been there for a while but because it seems Bear Vaults get opened there my canister is currently a Garcia. rootsrated.com/stories/the-legend-of-yellow-yellow-new-york-s-most-infamous-bear

Though from the Adirondak Loj shop at least the High Peaks bears are now getting into the BVs the normal way, by gnawing through the sides. They’ve got a couple on display: ragged holes right through the body.
Hmm. I wonder if the clearish sides mean the bears can see what the canister contains so they’re more persistent than with opaque Garcias? A bit like they’ll break into a car when the see a cooler inside (even if it’s empty).

A bit like they’ll break into a car when the see a cooler inside (even if it’s empty). What I read just recently on this is that the shape and plastic of the BV's allow bears to pick them up and take them away to work on chewing them open at their leisure. I guess the bears learn pretty quickly those are the ones they can grab. Some anecdotal reports they target BV's in a groups of canisters.
From the ADK site: Unfortunately, there is one bear canister model that does not work in the High Peaks: the Bear Vault canister. These clear blue canisters have been consistently broken into by our bears and should not be used in the High Peaks. With proper storage and cooking methods the number of negative bear human interactions has decreased in the High Peaks region and we at the ADK consider this an important part of being a responsible back country user.
