Yeah, that's not the first garbage can of that sort that that particular bear has run into.

I guess I shouldn’t be surprised. Octopi can solve getting into a screw top jar for their treats (Monterey Bay Aquarium does that to keep them from getting bored: bored octopi tend to figure out how to escape from their tank and startle the paying customers) and their basically clams without a shell…

They are so different that there is nothing you can really compare them to (and definitely not clam-like).

“ Clam is a common name for several kinds of bivalve molluscs. ‘ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clam“ An octopus (pl: octopuses or octopodes, see below for variants) is a soft-bodied, eight-limbed mollusc of the order Octopoda (/ɒkˈtɒpədə/, ok-TOP-ə-də[3]).‘ en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octopus😎😎😎

They are both in the bivalve family but clams may not have a brain and octopus have a main doughnut shaped brain and eight mini brains for each arm. That's pretty different. Also I forgot about nautilus. I could go along with they are nautilus without a shell.
Anyway I am rambling and do believe your clam comment was meant tongue in geek. A very geeky joke.

Reading through this thread I'm a bit confused. Do our bearproof food containers now need to be safe from prying tentacles as well?

Never under estimate clams. Remember the cartoon B. C.?

Google "Pacific Northwest tree octopus". It's a real thing.

A dive instructor told me he had a student hold a bag open while he grabbed and octopus. The student panicked and dropped the bag, and the octopus was smart enough to go for his mask and his air tube. So he had to quickly surface, I think he still got the octopus , that might be illegal now,
