I haven’t watched it yet. Interesting, why couldn’t you use wilderness area in it? No commercial filming in those areas.

why couldn’t you use wilderness area in it? Much to our surprise, this was considered a promotional video, even though it was promoting Wilderness! The USFS took awhile to get to that conclusion, asking us questions like, "Do you have a commercial sponsor?" Yes, I was planning on it and have one in the wings. If I didn't have them sponsor but paid for it myself, is it then not a promo video and I don't have to get a permit? "Oh, no. Even if you drop the sponsor it's considered a promotion." At one point, I finally got pretty steamed and just asked them to quit beating around the bush and tell me I needed a permit. I think they were hesitant to give me the bad news because we are such a key partner for them. So we had to get a permit. I think it's the same one a commercial film company would have to get. Though we got pretty quick approval. The permit does not allow video filming in Wilderness. Stills only. You will see a series of stills made to look like video that were taken in Wilderness of fire ring restoration, which we only do in Wilderness. We could also not fly the drone in Wilderness (a regulation not related to the permit) so all of the video taken and used was from outside congressionally designated Wilderness. We learned a ton. I'll be interested to hear what you think!

Finally watched it. Nicely done. Even though you couldn’t film in the WA the video of what you filmed were great.

Loved the topic and the cinematography...but I have to admit I found the music hard to like, and it took away from the images.
Maybe that's just me

Well, it's just "us." I didn't like the music at first either. Listened to other tracks provided by the (younger) filmmaker, who is a videographer for a hip, legendary ski area, while watching the film and kept coming back to this one. Then we tested it with a diverse group of 20 to 40ish Somethings -- our target audience -- and they ALL loved the music. So that inked it. I have to say it's grown on me, having watched it maybe 100x. And it's very sticky without being annoying because it doesn't have words (at least not comprehensible ones). We were looking for a high-energy feel, which is kind of discordant with the ethos of Wilderness for many of us old-timers, I have observed. THANKS FOR WATCHING AND FOR YOUR FEEDBACK!

Speaking of the original post itself, I just got my invitation to attend a training session for volunteers who plan to work this summer in the Desolation Wilderness. It's getting to be that time of year.
We get a training session (this one in May, but they like to give people plenty of notice!) and once we've completed the training, we're good to start volunteering.
If you are interested in any kind of volunteer work ths summer, you might start checking around now...

Good reminder. I need to check for what I might be able to do, with somewhat impaired shoulders, for the WTA.

Yes, we are announcing all of our trainings in our newsletter today. This year I have to get re-certified as a sawyer. (Every three years) We are offering first aid for the first time by popular demand. Do your orgs offer it?
