I think we have to be careful to separate canvas high tops from high cut boots. I think they are two very different things in terms of support. Canvas high tops may not provide much support (but maybe that feedback thing). High cut boots, i my experience, give ankle protection and significant support.
(Am I dating myself saying canvas high tops? Maybe high top sneakers would have been better)

For years and years I hiked in my Asolo Powermatics-typical heavy leather boots. Thats Winds, Beartooths, Adirondaks, Catskills. But a few weeks ago, on a trip to Harriman SP, which has many rocky, rugged trails, I wore my Merrell Moabs. Overnight, so I was carrying. It was a revelation! I tend to be hard-headed, but I don't know what took me so long! I felt like I was hiking in my bedroom slippers. No problem with the rocks, or scrambles. Didn't have to change into my camp shoes. I'm sold!

Didn't have to change into my camp shoes. I'm sold! This is part of my reason also for switching. Now you only have to decide if you want waterproof or not. That is also something that is easier decided by experience.

It all depends on the activity and type of terrain for me. If i'm backpacking with the family and carrying a full load in my 80L pack, with weight above my shoulders that can throw off my balance a little, I always wear a traditional high backpacking boot.
Most any other activity and i'm wearing trail runners. Only exception would be a hike on a technically challenging trail that is leaf covered.

I think also if you're doing off-trail hiking that boots would also be preferred. Which is why I will probably getting a pair of boots for our SAR events.
