This has been making the news in ultralight gear spaces as the pads will be warmer and reportedly for the Xlite, “non-crinkly”. I’m good with the version I bought last month but in the future I may be interested though with any sort of mid, any height gain brings the head closer to a shelter wall (may have to check out an Altaplex if Zpacks starts with “cat” curves in that shelter too). www.verdepr.com/blog/thermarest-xlite-nxt-spring-2023

I'll have to think about that. I got my Xlite early in production and it's been through a lot, including a cactus puncture in the field. BTW, the leak from that was slow enough that I finished the trip with it and repaired it when I got home. That was at least four years ago.
A little quieter would be nice.

No indication that they are addressing the huge issue of the mummy-shaped short pad. Oh well. I have my multiple solutions to that problem and am not in the market for another new pad.

huge issue of the mummy-shaped short pad I just picked up a rectangular Klymit short (25x52) and love it for summer. Quiet, clingy to other pads, bags, and floor and narrow enough to fit in my OR Highland bivy. I did not do the diligent research and marched out to my first two nighter with it. On top of a 50" Zrest, nice for this side sleeper. $40 shipped bought from a bikepacker on a Discord server.

I’m looking at the Helium bivy or MLDs eVent one for some summer trips (probably next yr), and am hoping Thermarest uses this new Xlite technology to revamp their Uberlite while giving a new summer pad less height. So if the updated Xlite has 3” of loft with an R value around 5+, .. maybe make a half as tall version with an R of almost 3.

the leak from that was slow enough that I finished the trip with it and repaired it when I got home. I tried to repair a slow leak in an Xlite at home for a week and couldn't even find it! Sent it in for repair. A field repair would be a challenge unless puncture was bigger. If low temps were expected, even trying to repair it in the middle of the night would be a pain. I started carrying a 1/8" ThinPad as well to protect it, add a little warmth and to have a emergency backup. Considered getting the womens Xlite if I could tolerate my feet off the pad. R5.4 vs 4.2 for same weight. New Xlite has better puncture protection but is only R4.5.

Pad height is definitely an issue. My Highland uses Pertex for the fabric top and is inferior for weather to my older Alpine Deluxe that uses Gore-Tex Respire. Pad height is also an issue with my latest tent, a Light Gear Solo, wher at 5'9" I am at the max height for that model. Fortunately, it is a hybrid double wall and at extremes I don't contact the fly.
