Nordic walking beats HIT (high intensity training), like interval training, or continuous training, like a long jog, in a study of cardiac rehab patients. This is walking briskly (various) while using poles to push off with the opposing arm swing (left leg = right arm). Note this must be done briskly so not everyone can benefit .. www.cnn.com/2022/06/30/health/nordic-walking-heart-health-study-wellness/index.htmlFrom the piece.. Bonus: Many backpackers already use similar trekking poles as a bonus.

Plenty of elliptical machines have poles to mimic this action.

I suppose that hiking with my poles, at least when I keep a brisk pace and keep the heartrate up, is about the same. I don’t have the arms/legs thing that strictly coordinated.

If you live at low elevation, multiple-day BPing trips in high-elevation mountains has got to be one of the best exercise/weight-loss programs around. Between the calorie deficit (eating is a struggle while acclimatizing for many people) and the hella workout, I always come back from my trips down 10 pounds or so, and my abs noticeably more toned.
Of course, in a world where beer and desk jobs exist, reversion to the mean is fairly swift.
