Greetings...

Has anyone here visited any of the federal FWS Refuges in South Carolina? I’m looking at relocating to the state down the road, so I’d like to get an idea for some great spots to go day hiking and take wildlife/raptor/bird photos. Over the last five years I’ve really enjoyed exploring some of the federal sites in the Pacific Northwest where I live. So, do you have any recommendations where to go and explore? Any good local/state sites in South Carolina? Thx for your help/info!

Honestly, I have not been to any of these. They all look to be in the lower parts of SC.

I can recommend Congaree N.P. for outstanding wildlife, and some interesting (but flat) hiking.

My favorite area is in the mountains of Upstate SC, where there are significant areas of protected land in the various State Parks, Wilderness Areas, and Heritage Preserves. A great intro to this area is the Foothills Trail. foothillstrail.org
