I prefer Aquamira for the lowest weight purification system but there are times I'd prefer a filter. But, my water sources are not near civilization and nearly all have non-stagnant water. Even Dolly Sods wasn't a problem, though we did use a filter there with chemical backup.

I stopped carrying chemicals as backup. Maybe there would be some situations where I might again but likely only where there are known viral issues with the water. I generally carry a stove with me and that is my backup. This is predicated on that I go places where I can get off the trail in an emergency in a day or two. So if my filter, by some strange events, is lost or somehow malfunctions I would fill my dirty water container as I can and then boil water as needed until I got myself off the trail. If I run out of fuel then I might start drinking the dirty water. It usually takes a day or so for the pathogens to take hold in your gut and hopefully I could get myself off the trail and medical care if needed before that. It would all be a running calculation.
Cold, clear, aerated and filtered water out in the fresh air of the woods is one of my favorite things. Pretty common to find here in the NE USA.
