Apparently very few people ever get off blood pressure medication. This is really too bad because these medications have some onerous side effects. My blood pressure was 185 three years ago, a crisis. Medication controlled it but I couldn't tolerate the side effects, like gout (hence my posts trying to find wider hiking boots as gout does some permanent damage to your feet). So I cleaned up my diet, lost 20 lbs, and cranked up my exercise, faithfully, year round and was able to get off the medication. My blood pressure is now 112 over 65, within the current healthy level. Heart rate 62. No more gout. You don't need a heroic amount of exercise. I do about 4 hours a week, always outdoors for enjoyment. One thing that made a difference was choosing walking trails with steep pitches---I noticed improvement in my blood pressure when I started walking more strenuously at a mountain bike recreation area.
