I’ve been looking for someone to do the Yana Trail with me as an overnighter for a while now. Enter Rebecca, a Backpacker friend who I met 14 years ago at a Backpacker gathering at Carrizo Plain, and conversed with many times over the years, but never hiked with 🙂 This area is gorgeous and it’s an unique opportunity to backpack along the Sacramento River. I’ve dayhiked other trails in the area and knew I was going to 😍 it. It’s not a great year for flowers but there’s still plenty to find 🌸 Tidy tips, Johnny tuck, goldfields, lupine, blue dips, clematis, nemophila, ithuriels spear, popcorn flower, fringepod, buck brush, biscuit root, wild cucumber, miners lettuce, saxifrage, etc. We also saw lots of butterflies and birds, fish jump in the river, and heard coyotes howl at night. The stars were incredible with just a sliver of moon ahead. We camped in a spot with views of Lassen in one direction and the Trinity Alps in the other, with Shasta peeking out a couple times along the trail as well. There is also a developed campsite at Massacre Flat but it was colder, damper and buggier which is why we opted for a higher campsite, with the benefit of views. But it was nice to watch wildlife by the river. It was a little windy on the hike out and I rescued a 🦋 who looked a little battered and tired and put it in a sheltered spot. We also found a cool rock shelter. In all we did about 12 miles.

Photos to follow! I got them onto my computer last night, but it was a battle and was as far as I got.

Oh, geez. tarol gave me a bump and I see I never put up any photos. Life got a little busy shortly after that and never really slowed down! Well, here are a few pictures. Starting out. Mt. Lassen and Brokeoff in the distance. Overlooking the Sacramento River.
Camp, with Lassen. Sunset on a volcano.
My favorite--a bowl of oatmeal and early morning sun.
We completed the one-way hike with clouds gathering and, as Tarol mentioned, the wind picking up. An old shelter--probably herders, not Native Americans.
 Tarol's butterfly friend.
There were pretty good flowers in places. This just left us scratching our heads.

Thanks for posting the photos and report. I live nearby and might think about hiking this trail.

I had a chance to hike part of the trail. I started at Perry Riffle trailhead and camped at Massacre Flat. I thought it was a really beautiful hike; it was very green and there were some flowers. I hiked beyond Massacre Flat toward Inks Creek but did not make it quite that far. I did not see the stone shelter; I either walked by it without noticing it, or maybe did not go far enough up the trail. It rained a little, but not too much. I went alone and did not see anyone else on the trail. I had the Massacre Flat camping area to myself at first, but then 5 guys in rowboats landed there and set up camp, so I ended up hanging out with them a bit. I don't have a photo hosting account anywhere. I did have a Photobucket account, but they started charging money, so I quit. I put some pictures up on my Facebook page. I'll put a link here. Anyone who is interested is welcome to check out my photos. www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001800422907

Using desktop mode, just hit reply (not quick reply) (top right) and look for the “add image to post” button (again, top right). That lets you add images directly from your computer or device.
