So that's why a chickadee looks so cute with its oversized head!

A long-time hiking partner of mine had a PhD in avian neurology. my friend's research showed brain size differences between birds that learned calls and those that sang more complex communication. And yes, in some species the brain does get bigger seasonally.
Update: a few years ago I lead a volunteer adjunct to to multi-state wolverine study. Setting bait, haunches of road killed mule deer, hung up trees with game cameras. Hours and hours of reviewing footage revealed the Chickadees consumed most the bait. Nothing but the bone after three months. Once a month, when we would check the stations and move the bait up the tree to clear the snow, the chickadees would scold and attack.

All I know is that chickadees recognize the bucket I use to fill the feeder. If I walk out into our yard without the bucket, not a peep. But if I have the bucket with me, they start chirping in excitement. And they're very observant... watching me from trees 150 feet away.

But if I go to the middle of the Adirondacks, I have no problem getting the truly wild chickadees to eat out of my hand. Maybe it's a food abundance/scarcity thing. No need for the local birds to take the chance.

Will readily fly right into my hand.

So I ran out of birdseed and didn't replenish for about 6 weeks. New seed in hand, I walk out to the abandoned feeder, and upon opening it, I hear chickadees calling in the distance. A short 5-10 seconds after I close the feeder and begin walking back to the house, they're eating at it.

I hear chickadees calling in the distance I don't get a lot of small birds, but bluejays, mourning doves and a sprinkling of "through species" like Cardinals and various finches. When I take out the feed bag - the plastic bag the sunflower seeds get sold in, I hear the calls from blocks away, and the birds arrive as soon as I'm inside again.

I was just in the backyard, and was being followed by a nuthatch that was scolding me the entire time. I first thought it had a nest nearby, but it followed me further than what I thought it would. Then on my way back inside I realized the problem... the feeder was empty! LOL! "Give me food, minion!!!"
