Is that last picture of dung as it dries, to be used as fuel?

Killer scenery, as always!
Your photos of the Ngozumba Glacier crossing most closely resemble my three Karakoram treks, where travel was by and large atop glaciers, and trails were few and far between.

Is that last picture of dung as it dries, to be used as fuel? Yes, it is. Yak dung, the fuel of choice. Actually, pretty much the only option.

They can be an absolute maze. Even though I was eventually relatively comfortable navigating through them on my own, that didn’t mean that I was immune to the occasional moment of getting stuck. Thrilling and nerve wracking, all at once!

GaliWalker, we were definitely not allowed to go wandering off on our own, except in the “towns”. That meant my son, who was naturally (at 22) a lot faster than the rest of us (at 50+), so ended up doing most of his hiking with the yaks or the porter. He kept a safe distance from the yaks, but learned a few things, including just how heavy 50-lb propane canister is.

For me, I could see the guides on each of my trips monitoring my progress for the first day or two, and then loosening the leash afterwards. On some trickier days they would advise me to stick with the porters, while they stayed with the bigger group.

There were a few times they let us off the leash. My son and I both dropped solo from the summit of Chukkhung Ri. Nowhere to get lost, and they would pick up the pieces easily enough if we hurt ourselves. Got me to lunch 20-30m minutes faster than staying with the group, which was huge.
