The attraction of a 6 ft bed to me, as has been alluded to, is that with a topper on it, you can sleep in it. I don’t do that much hauling except for household stuff so I don’t need anything super heavy duty. For years when I traveled, I used my Ranger with it’s camper shell as my primary residence and I was quite comfortable. I’ve recently upgraded to a small teardrop trailer which is quite nice - actually the height of luxury for me. Still, there are times I find the truck alone is more suitable for the overnighting I do.

The attraction of a 6 ft bed to me, as has been alluded to, is that with a topper on it, you can sleep in it. I don’t do that much hauling except for household stuff so I don’t need anything super heavy duty. . . . A few years ago I spent a week in Yellowstone just days after a camper was killed by a grizzly in a FS campground, and every camper was strongly encouraged to not sleep in a tent. Forest-Service campground hosts greeted my 6-foot topper shell with encouragement. I suppose I could have slept in a 5-foot box, but I value a good night's sleep when traveling. Having to double up night after night in a 5-foot box would be a serious problem. That extra foot of box was a big help. More recently I bought a different house and had to move about 15 pickup loads of possessions several miles to the newer house. That was in the middle of winter with several inches of snow on the ground and more falling from day to day. That extra foot of box saved me trips and allowed me to keep some things dry that otherwise would have protruded from a 5-foot box into the falling snow. That extra foot of box is far, far more useful to me than two or three back seats that would never ever get used if I bought a full-5-passenger pickup with 4 doors.

I went to the Ford website to see what I could build to my preferences and was not impressed. To get the hybrid version I had to give up the off-road package. There is no long-box available. Only the stubby box that hardly deserves the name "pickup." My most recent truck is a used 2013 Toyota Tacoma. Decent truck, easier to drive (smaller) than my previous trucks, but man, I miss that 8 foot bed. The Tacoma has a 6 or 6.5 foot bed. Having said that my logic in downsizing and buying the Tacoma was that I only had 1 or 2 more decent construction projects left in my life, and I could rent a bigger truck if needed. Box truck (moving van), flatbed, or whatever.

Why in Hades would they resurrect the name of a horrible car they once produced?

Why in Hades would they resurrect the name of a horrible car they once produced? Hoped to piggy back off the new Top Gun movie?

Hoped to piggy back off the new Top Gun movie? Nope; James Garner. ?? But they didn’t choose Rock. Ford probably wanted to avoid an association with a Dwayne. Though the possibilities for paint schemes off his tattoos would have been awesome! Hopefully they’ve put that in the files for the future. ETA: what brand pickup did his dad drive? ETA2: Bolding added.

James Garner played the title character in the old TV show Maverick.

And, later, the old tv show Rockford Files.
A GMC per wiki.

Why in Hades would they resurrect the name of a horrible car they once produced? The target audience for this vehicle wasn't born, nor do they have any memory of the original Maverick. And this is a "maverick" design in that there is nothing else like it out there price-wise/fuel-economy-wise. But yeah, I throw-up a little in my mouth at the mention of that name...

Tbh recycling names has a certain logic if you’ll build off the previous offering, such as Ford’s Bronco or Land Rover’s Defender. But, having raised expectations they’ve then got to deliver…. And that’s proved challenging.
The one I’m shaking my head over is that big hulking “Mustang”.

Delivering something better than Maverick 1.0 shouldn't be all that hard. But as mentioned above, no one in the market now has much of any idea what that car was. So I’m doubting it’s got legacy value unlike Bronco or Defender for example.

The Maverick has the hateful auto Start/Stop feature---a big negatory.
