On occasion I have friends/family that wish to go with me (backpacking) or just try it out once to see what they think. I have duplicates of just about everything but a backpack. I have a friend who will no longer be using his backpacking equipment due to health reasons. He purchased his gear in 2015 and his backpack is a Gregory Baltro 75. It's not a piece of gear that I would normally purchase but for this purpose I think it'll fit the bill just fine. I'm just wondering how someone would determine a fair price on some used gear?

You could check the price of similar gear on the geartrade website.

REI has a used one up on their site. It pretty much does what I was thinking, offer half price of a new one, depending on condition, of course.

Thanks guys, for pointing out the obvious that I was unable to think of....look for used gear online..duh!! The one additional point I’d add is look at multiple listings, best including stuff that has sold. People can overestimate what something is actually worth, so bundling multiple asking prices can smooth that out.

The Backpacking Light forums have the most active gear buy/sell/trade I know of, but a lot of the action is for cottage-maker gear. ut that's another good place to see what things are selling for.

40% of the new price. If it's in pristine condition, maybe 50%. A little beat up, 10% to 30%. To a good friend, $0 to $20 (yes, dollars not percent).
Precise enough?
