I need some stocking stuffer gear ideas for my son (10). He is really into little pieces of gear. Would like to get him some for his stocking. Possibly an intro to orienteering type thing but i've got no idea where to start with that.
Previous years gifts included: waterproof notebook small solar charger headlamp field guides first aid kit swiss army knife
Any other ideas? or help with the orienteering starter kit?

Well, there’s the obvious: an orienteering plate compass. Silva or some such.

Multi-tool, emergency bivy, lantern (maybe a Luci Light), compact binoculars, inflatable backpacking pillow, mini-flashlight (eg. Nitecore Tube), inexpensive point and shoot camera, a book such as Wild Outside, My Side of the Mountain, or Hatchet....

Cache Lake Country, by John J. Rowland’s has some backcountry gear items he can make using the book as a guide. Snow goggles, etc.
Regards,

10? How responsible is this child? Would a fire starter rod and steel be too hazardous?

100-200 lumens is plenty for most kids to have fun with, and maybe even use constructively. I have a 900 lumens flashlight that I generally can't let my 9 year old twins use. They can't help shining it in people eyes and it hurts.

The one I gave him is similar to the one I have, which he loves. I thought it had a high and low setting, but it looks like it has three. I'm pretty sure that he neither knows nor cares about that. He just likes climbing in one of my sleeping bags, turning it on, and having me drag him around the house. Unfortunately for him, he's getting to darn heavy for that. It's 160 lumens max, medium and low are 30 and 5 lumens. It's also small, which is a plus in various situations. www.fenix-store.com/fenix-e12-v2-0-aa-flashlight-for-everyday-carry/

For dark adapted eyes modest lumens I find works very well with the added benefit that one tiny AAA battery lasts forever and it’s spare battery backup ‘sweight is negligible.
