Thing is, that isn't talking about wilderness backpacking at all, it's the kind of backpacking people do in Europe, riding the rails and walking sidewalks.
I will never feel at risk and have never felt at risk of assault in the backcountry. Period. If you're within a mile of the road, that's a different story entirely.

I agree with almostthere, for the most part. Once or twice I have felt a strong urge to put some distance between someone and myself. Come to think of it, those have been pretty near trailheads, though more than a mile in. The backcountry seems a much safer place than cities to be a woman alone. It is also, IMHO, a lot less lonely to be alone in the wilderness with no one about than to be alone in the city with a million people within shouting distance, none of whom give a poop for you.
