I've only hiked in the desert once but I had not thought of that. I'll keep this in mind for next time.

If there is limited water in the desert, then do keep in mind that many critters depend on it. Camping away from the source allows them freedom of access. Not taking more than you absolutely need may allow some other critter to get enough to survive.

If there is limited water in the desert, Fortunately for us that particular year the Superstition Mountains received plenty of rain and while you had to know where the water sources were they were all flowing or full. Roger's Trough was dry but only because the line had been broken further up the mountain.
