Labor day weekend I was fortunate to hike both Upper and Lower Jade Lakes, a delightful lollypopish loop of about 7 total miles from Brooks Lake. I camped in my hard sided pickup in the dispersed area above the Brooks Lake Campground. Got a great early start for a hike I've loved for a long time. I prefer to hike the loop in a clockwise fashion going to Upper Jade first. Most folks just go to Upper Jade and turn around. It was a wonderful day, smoke had abated significantly to a tolerable haze. There is however one truly sad thing to report: There is toxic algae in Brooks and both Jade Lakes. It was remarkably noticeable at Upper Jade where having far more than a simple fondness for this hike I photographed the mess. Where the alarming algae came from is a matter of debate. Wherever it came from it was an almost dystopian canvas, green, black, and stunningly opaque. This is a beautiful headwater of the Wind River, later I'll try and add a few photos from other trips I wasn't focused on that green slime. This is a wonderful area but of course grizzly habitat so make sure you honor those and all other appropriate protocols. I'm of course not filtering any of the water, just day hiking. I wish death on this algae like I've not wished death on anything for some time. My hard sided camping simplicity 090421. The Sun sets over Sublette Pass.

Sad mess indeed. Other than the algae, it looks like you had a good time. Clear skies, nice temps. Thanks for the TR and the pics.

That warning notice about drinking water contaminated with cyanobacteria is unsettling. This water supply has been confirmed and marked. How many others are contaminated and not posted? I see similar algae slime when fishing the Wind and East Fork R, as well as the Green. May not be cyano but how would a lay person know? Not that I'd normally filter from the Green in particular (way too many cattle up there). Luckily most of my water fills are near treeline or above. But, perhaps that's not even good enough to escape contamination.
Leaving soon for a month to explore the area. Hopefully, slime-free!
