I just received a catalog from Stio; it’s really nice. Great photos and scenery; some narrative text. Kinda reminds me of Patagonia’s catalogs. I occasionally see some of their gear being worn here in the Pacific Northwest where I live. I’ve never purchased any of their gear, though. Anyone here use their gear? Below is an interview with Stio’s founder; he was involved with Cloudveil, too (it was another outdoor clothing company). Stio is out of Wyoming. sgbonline.com/conversation-with-stephen-sullivan-the-visionary-behind-stio/Regards, DR

Average quality, overpriced "outdoor lifestyle" apparel. Been in their flagship store many times in Jackson.

And with all those trips to their store have you purchased anything? Regards, DR Nope, only ever looked at the sales racks. Nothing ever tripped my trigger. There are other quality makers of better gear for the same or less money. Montbell for one. And while I own an inordinate amount of Patagonia's stuff, I only buy it on good sales. I'd rate Stio about the same as Patagonia, which is to say average quality, overpriced, "outdoor lifestyle" apparel. When I lived in Jackson I passed the Stio store every day to and from work, so I'd stop every once in a while. I'd always rather buy Patagonia on sale.

There use to be a Montbell store here where I live in Portland, Oregon. Unfortunately, it closed down. Not sure why it didn’t last here. There are so many brands that have stores here. Well, back to the jazz station. They’re playlist today is absolutely outstanding... And incidentally, I’m the same way with Patagonia and always buy on sale and get a good price. I’m very happy with their Micro-Puff Hoodies in the rainy climate of the Pacific Northwest. Regards, DR

Average quality, overpriced "outdoor lifestyle" apparel. Been in their flagship store many times in Jackson. I tend to agree. I just visited their Boulder store last Sunday. Their catalogs are excellent and enticing, and I think their gear is probably fine for general-purpose use. But it doesn't stand out and isn't especially well-suited for backpacking.

Agree with bradmacmt and BigLoad re "outdoor lifestyle" apparel. I bought two pieces last year with a 25% coupon (also qualified for free shipping) - a fleece jacket and pants. Still not cheap but I will say that they're well made with good materials (e.g., no pilling after wearing/washing the fleece pants every week all winter), nice colors. I didn't buy either piece specifically for backpacking and haven't used them for that purpose. I have a friend who's susceptible to brand-envy and I noticed recently that he's sporting a Stio nalgene bottle. He seemed pleased that I noticed, but got embarrassed when I asked what he thought of the brand... he only had the water bottle. :D I thought that sort of summed up the market niche Stio occupies, though maybe it's different in Jackson, among skiers.

On a related note, I also stopped by the Melanzana store/factory in Leadville. I should say attempted to stop in. Store entry is by appointment only, and the next available appointment was 10 days hence. They also have a hard purchase limit of two items per person. I think their market niche is different from Stio in a primarily social/cultural way.

Their catalog is definitely nice, but I always got the impression they were 100% lifestyle wear. Like a much larger version of mountain khakis or royal robbins.

Yes, Mountain Khakis reminds me of Stio. Similar catalogs and location. One thing I will say for Royal is I love their Billy Goat shorts. No man capris for me... Regards, DR
