South Lake Tahoe is under a mandatory evacuation order. Evacuation orders extended to the Heavenly and Stateline areas due to the Caldor Fire. The winds picked up last night and will stay windy through Wednesday night. Please stay safe everyone.

The Fire is looking somewhat better by 9/5. The Tahoe Basin has a long history of fire suppression and little logging. Fuel loading is extreme in a drought with bad fire weather. Losing South Lake Tahoe was nip and tuck for several days.
Support logging and thinning to give firefighters a chance.

The bark beetle has killed many trees, already weakened by years of drought. Those dead trees need to be removed. The forests around Lake Tahoe need to be cleared by logging, and better management. I think that the years of cutting the budget to the Dep. Of Agriculture, and ignoring the plight of the forests, has played a large role in the new age of mega-fires.
Also the red tape that a homeowner must take to remove trees on their property in the Tahoe basin is laughable. How many permits are necessary for the property owners to clear a defensible space? Those permits are hard to get. That is why they don't or can't protect their own homes.

Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) makes everything difficult. The Tahoe Basin Management Unit of the USFS makes everything more difficult.
On the surrounding National Forests, NEPA and environmental lawsuits stop proposed timber sales in their tracks.
I toured the area around South Lake Tahoe and Meyers last week. There is much less burned timber than I expected. The majority of the homes lost were to the west in the Sierra foothills around Grizzly Flat, around 760 houses. It is remarkable how many houses around Tahoe have mature trees next the them with branches hanging over the roof. There was some luck involved.
