they often announce new iPhones in September so not long to find out. iPhone 13 will support satellite communications, says Ming-Chi Kuo“Noted Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says that the "iPhone 13" will have the ability to use satellite communications, thanks to a customized baseband chip. In a note to investors, seen by AppleInsider Ming-Chi Kuo says that the Qualcomm X60 baseband chip that Apple is predicted to be using in the "iPhone 13" will support low-earth orbit satellite communications. He bases this on Qualcomm's work with Globalstar, making the latter the most likely partner for the effort. "There are many potential scenarios for Apple's business model cooperation with Globalstar," writes Kuo. "The simplest scenario is that if the user's operator has already teamed with Globalstar, the user can directly use Globalstar's satellite communication service on the iPhone 13 through the operator's service‘ appleinsider.com/articles/21/08/29/iphone-13-will-support-satellite-communications-says-ming-chi-kuo

Thanks for this post. Just last week I was reading about a new company that was including sat-phone compatibility in their phone. If Apple is gonna do this it will kill the other phone company. I guess they'll have a hard time getting investors now.

I’m not sure, the market surely has room for an Android satellite capable cellphone and the Qualcomm chip would be useable in whatever system.
But a pure startup could face a bigger challenge on that than Samsung etc.

Very interesting. I’m not going for the 13 but will look again when the 14 is announced. In the meantime the amazing developments will continue.

I’d want to see how well it could communicate with said satellite, but could be of interest for my iPhone 14 or 15 purchase if the signal is powerful enough, there’s an appropriate plan for my usage, etc..

I have used Globalstar systems from remote sensing to SPOT devices. It will be available only in limited markets and will carry a add-on subsrcription. The major limits are from Globalstars sat network. Reminder, the chipset may be aboard, but that does not mean servce. Almost every smart phone has a chip for FM radio but only one company, NOKIA, made it available for use with their short-lived Windows phone OS.

I'd be happier if they offered Universal Calling from Anywhere within Cell coverage. Tripping off to Canada? Covered by your plan. Mexico? Scotland? Australia? All covered. When I can use my phone anywhere on Earth that has cell coverage, I'll be happy. I'm not that often in need of my cell in places that have no coverage, making a Sat phone nice to have along.

The cost of adding a couple chips to a circuit board in a new design is nominal. If this takes off, I suspect the other phone manufacturers will jump on the band wagon. On one hand, I can see where the ability to connect from nearly anywhere would be nice... On the other hand, it's just one more way to tether people to civilization, making it harder and harder to disconnect.

I assume the signal will still be able to interact with the 5G nanobots within the COVID vaccine?

True, but I (and many others) didn't board that ship. Uh huh. You have checked the line on Everest lately, haven't you? We humans are all over, and there are McDonalds everywhere. (I suspect that one will open on the slopes of Everest soon.) There are still wild and undeveloped places in the world, but you better hurry if you want to visit them. I strongly suggest that you schedule your visit to coincide with the next large solar flare incident: maybe you'll be able to truly be "on your own". :^D On a more serious note, I recently found an article with what I thought was a good explanation of how the story about "satellite comm" first got started. I found it interesting. OTOH, we probably need to start doing less worrying about the next Apple "tech gadget" and its "amazing" new features, as well as taking these predictions with a large grain of salt - people are making real money just doing this silly stuff. Anyway, I can't find the article now, but it was, acc. to the article, a conflation of Globalstar's footprint in certain components in the phone with actual satellite comm, but the chip mentioned is "ground-based LTE" and not satellite - more likely related to 5G (nanobots!) than satellites. GPS is "satellite comm", but it's one way, receive-only AFA the iPhone is concerned. The "pie in the sky" stuff will come someday, but not this year.

The "pie in the sky" stuff will come someday, but not this year. Funny... I've had the Pink Floyd lyric "The pie in the sky turned out to be miles too high" repeating in my head today.
