After jamming a Platypus Big Zip in with a big bear can and everything else month after month for six years, it finally leaked out a side seam. They replaced it under warranty. Replacement leaked within two months, so got a replacement for it. That's still going strong, four years. It goes in day packs and in backpacks. They work on long trips fine. Never nervous about it.
I bring a small nalgene to mix powder into water for lemonade, tea, coffee or electrolytes.

I don't like "hydration bladders" for drinking, because they are too much trouble to keep clean, for me. I prefer to carry two 1L Nalgene HDPE bottles for clean water, and a 1L Nalgene polycarbonate bottle for drinking. I'll use an MSR Dromedary bag for camp water, or if there is a long distance between sources, but I honestly do more staying put in camp than logging miles.

I like bladders. Shorter trips, I bring one. I clip it to the side using mini-biners. Easy to remove and refill. Easy and often access to water (no stopping to take bottle out). I will not store my bladder in my pack as I don't want to risk getting my gear wet inside. Winter trips, I bring two. I don't care about bladder taste. I've been using Camelbak bladders for many years and I think one of my favorite ones (100oz) is going on 20 years now and still performs great.

I carry a bladder, in a side pocket (those capacious pockets on the ULA Circuit!). On the other side, I carry a 20-oz soda bottle like the ones in Zeke’s photo, for mixing drinks or extra capacity if needed. I have a dry mouth so having a drink tube and sipping often is really the only route for me, though a glug from a bottle is more satisfying (the other reason I carry a small bottle). I use the basic super-light Platy bag, Over the years I’ve had one actually leak, and a couple of others I’ve retired due to excessive wear (one of those is now my dirty-water bag). Actually, the only complaint I have is that they don’t use the same threads as all the other bottles, so my Sawyer Mini won’t thread directly onto the Platy—I have to use the cap and hose from the clean bladder. I just run a little clean water back through it when I’m done filtering.
I may get a CNOC bag for dirty water, but they are heavier than my Platy, so… I’m not in a hurry. Extra fuss isn’t a big deal for me.
So, short version for the OP: Bladder AND bottle.
