you’re in for a lot of stress and frustration when you inevitably fail to achieve that. These kinds of trips require a good bit of flexibility because you never know what you’re going to encounter. So, inquiring minds want to know. Taking that into consideration what goes into trip planning and route planning. I'm guessing that you're fairly confident that it can be done in the expected time? Yep. Some planning aspects of these kinds of trips… 1. Camp flexibility. Only one of our camps was in a place we really planned to camp. TrailElder had done a little scout hike a few weeks ago, and that came in handy in finding an unplanned retreat camp on the way out. He definitely had a mental file of possible contingency camps. 2. Route flexibility. We had several route options fleshed out going in, and decided on the details as we went. Once we hit the alpine, weather was the primary variable, as always. We hit the unknown country first—had the weather allowed, we’d have made our way to routes I had first-hand experience with from there. 3. Time flexibility. We were planning 5-6 days. We both packed more like 7-8 days food, because on these kinds of trips, you never know. I’ve done a lot of these types of trips. I’d say about 1 in 3 or maybe 1 in 4 go off just as planned. The others, you have to improvise a little.

The day we climbed to lake 11,640? Really? Wow. Right??? Yes it was a short day, and lovely. But we felt like we had put in a good day by the time we reached the lake. Stats for Day 2: Total Time: 3:15 hr:min Distance: 1.7 Black miles Ave. Speed: .5 mph Moving Speed: 1.1 mph Moving Time: 1:36 hr:min Ascent: 917 ft. By comparison, Stats for Day 1 when we had a trail much of the way (what? maybe 80%?): Stats for Day 1: Total Time: 8 hours Distance: 8.93 miles Ave. Speed: 1.1 mph Moving Speed: 1.6 mph Moving Time: 5.5 hours Ascent: 3,227 ft.

Mannn, I think this kind of trip would be just great! The only thing I've done that comes close to this is last year in La Garita. The 2nd day we followed a creek/drainage down to another trail. It got interesting at times but my hiking partner had done route before so he kinda knew what to expect. TrailElder, thanks for posting the stats. It looks like the first day was clear sailing compared to the 2nd.
