“Brief Description: YOSE 229677, Rehab TMC The campground is a major visitor destination. This project will relocate campsites and roads out of the floodplain, add 2 restrooms, formalize campsites, improve the trail system, upgrade the amphitheater, rehab 8 historic restrooms, restore part of the river’s edge, and overhaul water and wastewater lines. The design will retain the current capacity of 329 camp sites. Work to be completed over 2-3 construction seasons due to winter shut down. Location: Yosemite National Park, east side of park along Tioga Road, in the high country‘ www.nps.gov/orgs/1804/upload/A3_YOSE229677_GAOA_Industry_Fair-508.pdfthe project documents and drawings: full plumping services upgrade etc. sam.gov/opp/444507d424984741bf86cb5dcc13597b/viewthats probably what keeps them from closing sections in stages: having to shut down all the water and power for a complete replacement.

Wow. That will really impact camping in the park. Absolutely. That’s pushing 60% of the sites along Tioga Rd. Closed for multiple years. I’m pretty astounded they couldn’t close the campground in sections. One third a season would have been far less devastating.

No backpacker campground in Tuolumne Meadows. It is time for the upgrades. Those old restrooms have been leaking for decades. Its going to hurt during the shutdown for sure. White Wolf will still be open, but it will be fully booked for the summer in a blink of an eye.

Yes I suspect it the utility replacements that shut it all down, ripping out the old plumbing and power cables is undoubtedly impossible to do piecemeal. I wonder if they’ll convert all the other ones to reservations? Tamarack Flat, White Wolf campground, Yosemite Creek, Porcupine Flat; all are 100% fcfs when open, versus Tuolumne Meadows at 50% reservable. www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/campgrounds.htmThough, yes, I’d think after another year all the lodges, White Wolf and Tuolumne Meadows should be staffed and open. Id booked into the newly rehabbed White Wolf Lodge (I’ve never been) for this September but they canceled this season.

If you have been to Tuolumne lately, there is major construction currently going on. We did comment "why didn't a few things get done during last year's shutdown?

Ha, no repairs needed here. And the worst of it is is that this restroom, men's side, has one stall. This serves B and C campsites plus six group sites. (No groups this year.)

Glacier Point Road is supposed to be closed next year too. Yah, I’m trying to squeeze in a route up to Ottoway Lakes etc. from there in part due to that closure

I went past the Ottoway lakes about 10 yrs ago as part of the Red Peak Pass loop. I enjoyed them so much. They may have been the highlight of that loop.

Yes that loop was my introduction to those lakes as well, I’d intended to head for the High Trail and the Lyell headwaters of the Merced fork but detoured down the Triple Peaks fork due to weather (very bad). That Ottoway setting is an amazing bowl. If not this year I’d consider coming in from Besore Rd, frankly that might be the better route with less sand slogging.

This is what happens when we overcrowd and overuse an area... it breaks to the point that it has to be closed down so it can be fixed. This should be used in the war against entitled jerks who whine and moan about quotas, advance reservations, and such that are in place to protect public lands. Look, entitled public -- if you stop trashing our property and help with the maintenance, it can stay open for everyone.
On the other hand... they could have been doing this in stages throughout the snowless winters... during the pandemic, I wouldn't doubt the concern was making workers gather together to work thus exposing them to the virus.

I suspect that huge parks funding bill is to blame and we’ll be seeing a lot more closures as they race to deal with that 12 billion dollar backlog. I hear they’re doing a lot of construction along Tioga Rd in Tuolumne Meadows to improve and regularize parking. www.congress.gov/116/plaws/publ152/PLAW-116publ152.pdfFY 2021 is its first year of money appropriation.
