How do you guys feel about mule tape?* Mule tape has a rating of 2000 pounds, if you get the 3/4" good stuff. Amsteel is better, and lighter, if you get the 7/64ths stuff. Amsteel can be spliced into a loop, whereas mule tape has to be knotted, which reduces it's overall rating. I can get Amsteel at West Marine for about 25¢ a foot. I got Mule Tape for free at work, but I no longer work. I still have some lying about, but don't seem to use it for much of anything these days.

I’ve been looking into this stuff for the last couple weeks just for fun, but I think you’re right: 7/64 amsteel is a better deal. I was reading about making a single line suspension with amsteel or mule tape, but mule tape is too sensitive to abrasion on tree bark, even further weakening it. Plus, w/o ti hardware, you gotta use knots - and that’s not good for rating margins, as you noted. But both of us are being too serious and information-laden for this thread about ‘empty’.

I am now thinking that gaffer tape is in fact a mispelling of the tape used on gophers. Naw. ‘Gaffer’ is a British term (probably outdated) for an old guy. So gaffer tape is used to shut up the old guy at the bar who tells the same endless story over and over.

Now I understand why Samwise Gamgee referred to his father as "my old gaffer" in Lord of the Rings.

... the old guy at the bar who tells the same endless story over and over I would take offense, but I don't much go to bars anymore.

Now this thread is both empty AND redundant.

Along the same lines as the rest of this thread --- that is, "empty" --- I saw this yesterday. Looks like Elon is finally going to complete his "mobile tech trifecta" by setting up Teslas to go underwater.

Never heard of that use of the word gaffer. Gaffter tape is used by photographers and videographers to hold stuff down. Think of it as duct tape, without the sticky residue. Leaving residue on a gym floor is a definite no-no, especially if it's recently been resurfaced.

I am now thinking the term "gaffer tape" came in use with television when that tape was applied over the mouth of announcers that made a gaffe. So they taped the gaffer.

Yes, that is how I learned of the origin of the name gaffer (lighting/electrician), that it came from its common use by gaffers and the like in the film set or the theater. They have a lot of peculiar terms in the film industry like stinger, bookends,Foley, whipe, tighty-on ,push in and so on.Terms that don't mean much outside of it. I did a few amateur productions, the first guy I employed to film a dance performance (he was probably 20 or so at the time) ended up working on TV over there. This guy: www.imdb.com/name/nm1095487/For the same job I also had one of his mates who then went on to make a living out of animation.

If I’m reading the Wiki article correctly, then gaffer (old man/godfather/grandfather) has a wholly different etymology from the gaffer on a set—the latter coming from the gaff hooks/poles used to move lights. A gaff I remember from nautical stories, and now I’ll have to dive down the etymology of that one. Doubt it’s “godfather” though.
