This Saturday July 18 drove up into the Carson River areas of Toiyabe National Forest for some wildflower work. The below area is at crest elevations a bit below 9k feet with rich volcanic geology that tends to support an abundance of wildflowers even during this drought year. This was a cloudy day with scattered showers. The magenta species is rock fringe, epilobium obcordatum. The yellow species is streambank arnica, arnica amplexicaulis. The whitish violet species is mountain pennyroyal, monardella odoratissama, of the mint family with a strong fragrance. The striking rock fringe normally occurs in small patches but here it covered several times as much an area as I'd ever seen. Enlarged vertical slice at 50% pixels. www.davidsenesac.com/2015_Trip_Chronicles/OJ07046-07068_4x1vsl.jpgThe below is a close-up of rock fringe from same area. Sony A6000 Sigma 60mm F2.8 DN, 10 images focus stack combined with Zerene Stacker, 6000x4000 pixels. Enlarged vertical slice at 50% pixels. Royal Catchfly Silene regia
Pink Family (Caryophyllaceae) N.E. IL. native endangered in IL. An herbaceous perennial 2'-3' tall. Endangered due to habitat loss grows in prairies, openings in upland forests, and savannas. The nectar of the flowers attracts Ruby-Throated Hummingbirds and larger butterflies. The calyx is covered with sticky hairs that trap climbing insects. Red is an uncommon color among prairie flowers and many pollinators (bees) cannot perceive red. Butterflies have a long proboscis that can reach nectar at the bottom of the long calyx.

Get down and dirty, photo courtesy of my wife These are taken in a county preserve near where I live and if I were to lay down I/you would see about 2 inches these prairie plants are 3 to 7,8 or more feet high. The Compass Plant was taken with my arms over my head. Those are Compass Plants in the background with flowers closer to the ground but I try to stay closer to the trail. This is about chest high, no way I'm crawling through that, mosquitoes, chiggers and ticks, that said I'll try to give a little more info and a few more angles. BTW these are taken with a point and shoot camera I take with me on bike rides trying to stay a few feet ahead of the swarm.

Side Oats Gramma Bouteloua curtipendulaN.E. IL. native a member of the Grass Family Easy to overlook, it's about 2' tall the close up is slightly larger than actual size. Not an uncommon prairie plant it prefers full sun is drought tolerant and grows in most soils, This was found in the flood plain of a small stream. Hard to get a focused image, took a couple days, the slightest breeze gets the whole prairie swaying.

Sky Pilot, on Alpine Col in the Eastern Sierra Nevada. I believe this one grows only in the alpine, and maybe only where nothing really ought to be able to grow. For context, it was growing in the shade of a rock partway down this slope.
